Organic Chemistry of Functional Groups-III

Note : Attempt all questions from Section-A. Eight questions from Section-B and two questions from Section-c

SECTION - A
10 x 1½ = 15

1.
(a) What is saponification and iodine value of oils? Explain briefly.

(b) What are reducing and nonreducing sugars? Give examples of each types.

(c) What are the phase transfer catalysts. Give examples.

(d) Write the structure of enantiomers of -D-(+)-Glucose.

(e) What are carbohydrates? Give their classifications illustrating an example

(f) What is solid phase synthesis of peptides? Explain.

(g) What are ribonucleotides? Write the structure of uridylic acid.

(h) What are Ir-active and IR-inactive bonds? Illustrate with examples.

(i) Give the expected absorption bands (IR Region) for the following:-
(i) Hexane
(ii) 1-Hexane
(iii) 1-Hexyne.

(j) What are auxochromes? Give suitable examples mentioning the reason for their functioning as auxochromes.

2. Define Beer-Lambert Law. Discuss absorption of light by a solution and measurement of absorption intensity.

3. Discuss briefly the type of molecular vibrations in Infrared spectroscopy. How C-H stretching varies with the type of hybridization of Carbon?

4. Discuss Gabriel synthesis of primary amines. How would you prepare
(i) Benzyl amine
(ii) 1-Hexanamine
Why aniline cannot be prepared by this method?

5. Show how would you convert p-anisidine to
(i) p-fluoro toluene
(ii) Iodobenzene.
(iii) Tollunitrile

6. What kind of saccharide is sucrose? Does it show mutarotation? Give its chair structure and IUPAC names. Is it a reducing or non-reducing sugar?

7. Describe how a mixture of primary, secondary, tertiary amines can be separated.

8. What are glycosides? Why are they called non-reducing sugars? Discuss their preparation.

9. Describe briefly mutarotation. What other carbohydrates other than D-Glucose shows mutarotation?

10. Discuss D- and L- configurations of carbohydrates. Write the structurtes of D- and L- threose.

11. What is Edmann degradation of peptides? Give equations for reaction with tetrapeptide Ala. Gly. Thr. Leu. What is the advantage of this degradation?

12. What are deoxyrhibonucleic acids (DNA)? Show how the bonding is present in the primary structure of DNA.

13. What are enzymes? Briefly discuss their specificity. How these are different from inorganic catalysts?


SECTION - c

14. (a) What are proteins? Classify them on the basis of shape and biological activity. Give an example of each type.
(b) Describe the type of bonding responsible for their tertiary and quaternary structures.
(c) Explain why the helical coil of a protein terninates at proline always?
(d) Write a short notes on denaturation of proteins. (4,4,2,2,)

15. (a) Discuss double stranded structure of DNA. Give the significance of base pairing.
(b) Describe briefly the synthesis of amino acids by Strecker' method.
(c) Discuss synthesis of peptides. Mention the main protecting group of acids and amines. How many tripeptides are possible from three amino acids? (4,4,4)
