2008 Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University Chemical engineering IV B.Tech. I Semester Regular Examinations, November -2008 MASS TRANSFER OPERATIONS-III Question paper
Code No: R05410802 Set No.1 IV B.Tech. I Semester Regular Examinations, November -2008 MASS TRANSFER OPERATIONS-III (Chemical Engineering) Time: 3 hours Max Marks: 80 Answer any FIVE Questions All Questions carry equal marks ? ? ? ? ? 1. Write short notes on types of diffusion in solids. [16] 2. (a) 1000 kg of a sodium carbonate solution containing 25% Na2CO3 by weight is subjected to evaporative cooling. During this process 15% of the water present in the solution is evaporated. From the concentrated solution Na2CO3.10H2O crystallizes out. Calculate how much crystal that would be produced if the solubility of Na2CO3.10H2O be 21.5 g/100 g water. (b) Do the crystals of a substance of size 1 mm have the same solubility in a solvent like the 1 ?m particles? Can you give a qualitative explanation of any difference? [10+6] 3. Describe the construction and working of a draft type baffle crystallizer with neat sketch. [16] 4. An induced draft counter current cooling tower required for cooling 1000 GPM of water from 430c the design wet bulb temp, for the entering air is 280c. It has been decided to use the same air rate as the liquid rate as the liquid rate. The superficial mass velocity of air is 5000 kg/hr.m2.hr atm. Determine the packed height required if the ratio hla/kya is infinity. [16] Equilibrium data: Enthalpy, 83.3 90.52 97.250 111.88 129.29 148.55 172.23 196.59 H × 10 - 3(j/kg) Liquid 26.7 28.30 32.2 35 37.8 40.6 43.3 temp,tl,oC. 5. (a) What is continuous drying? Write the equations of material and energy bal- ance continuous drier. (b) In a laboratory test the drying of a solid material, the following relationship was obtained for the falling rate period: dw/dt = -0.8(w - 0.031) where w is free moisture content, kg per kg of dry solid and t is time in hours. Critical moisture content of the solid under prevailing conditions was found to be 1.4 kg per kg of dry solid. Determine the time required to dry the material from initial moisture content of 4kg per kg of dry solid to a final moisture content of 0.1 kg per kg of dry solid. 6. (a) Write short notes on application of dialysis process for kidney failure cases. (b) Obtain an expression for ideal separation factor in pervaporation (c) Explain briefly about the transport number in electro dialysis. [4+6+4] 7. (a) Write short notes on turbulent promoters. (b) Discuss concentration polarization in electro dialysis and explain the term ‘limiting current density’. [6+10] 8. What are general factors that affecting down stream process sequence and equip- ment selection?
