2003 Anna University B.Tech Textile Engineering PHYSICAL STRUCTURE AND PROPERTIES OF FIBRES Question paper
Time : Three hours Maximum : 100 marks Answer ALL the questions.
PART A — (10x2 = 20 marks)
1. Explain the term ‘lamellae’ in fibre structure. 2. Explain the term ‘scale’ in fibre morphology. 3. What is four spot x–ray diffraction pattern? 4. Give the range of wave number applied for the IR radiation study on fibres. 5. Define integral heat of sorption. 6. Explain the term transient equilibrium in moisture absorption. 7. Give reasons for the increase in extension of fibres on wet condition. 8. Define torsional rigidity. 9. Compare the objective and subjective methods of lustre measurement of fibres. 10. What is heat setting? Give its advantages.
PART B — (5x16 = 80 marks)
11. What is di–electricity? Explain the influence of various factors on the di–electricity of fibres. 12. (a) Explain in detail the physical, chemical and morphological structure of cotton fibre. Or (b) Explain the principle, construction and working of transmission type electron microscopy with various specimen preparation techniques. 13. (a) Explain the moisture absorption behaviour of various fibres based on their physical structure, chemical structure and climatic conditions. Or (b) Explain with graphical representation the influence of humidity and temperature on the stress–strain relations of various fibres. 14. (a) What is flexural rigidity? Derive the relationship between flexural rigidity and other fibre properties of fibres. Or (b) Explain any two methods of measuring the refractive index of fibres. Also give the relationship between bi–refringence and orientation factor. 15. (a) Give the various electrical circuits used to measure the electrical resistance of fibres. Also explain the specimen preparation technique. Or (b) Write short notes on the following : (i) Mechanical conditioning of fibres (ii) Influence of frictional property in textile processing.
