2009 Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University Electrical and Electronics Engineering III B.Tech II Semester Regular Examinations, April/May 2009 JNTU Kakinada, INSTRUMENTATION Question paper

Course: B.Tech Electrical and Electronics Engineering   University: Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University

Code No: 2320204 Set No. 1
III B.Tech II Semester Regular Examinations, April/May 2009
INSTRUMENTATION
(Electrical & Electronic Engineering)
Time: 3 hours Max Marks: 80
Answer any FIVE Questions
All Questions carry equal marks
? ? ? ? ?
1. (a) Define ‘repeatability’ and ‘reproducibility’ and discuss why instruments should
possess these characteristics.
(b) Explian how the ‘nonlinearity’ of a measuring system is defined and estimated.
[8+8]
2. (a) Explain the rectangular, pulse and unit impulse function with its frequency
spectrum of aperiodic signal.
(b) Give the functions of rectangular wave and rectangular pulse train of periodic
signal. [8+8]
3. (a) Derive an expression for the vertical deflection of an electron beam in the
CRT.
(b) The deflection sensitivity of an oscilloscope is 35 v/cm. If the distance from
deflection plates to CRT screen is 16cm, length of the deflection plate is 2.5cm
and the distance between the deflecting plates is 1.2cm. What is the acceler-
ation anode voltage?
[8+8]
4. Explain with a neat circuit diagram of a R.M.S voltmeter. [16]
5. (a) Mention a few applications of heterodyne wave analyzers.
(b) Explain the principle and operation of basic spectrum analyzer with a neat
block diagram. [4+12]
6. A piezoelectric transducer has a capacitance of 1000pF and a charge sensitivity of
40× 10 - 3 C/m. The connecting cable has a capacitance of 300pF while the oscil-
loscope used for readout has an input resistance of 1M
and a parallel capacitance
of 50pF.
(a) what is the sensitivity of the transducer alone?
(b) (V/m) of the entire measuring system?
(c) what is the lowest frequency that can be measured with a 5% amplitude error
by the entire system
(d) what is the value of external shunt capacitance that can be connected in order
to extend the range of 5% error down to 10 Hz.?
(e) What is the high frequency sensitivity, when the external shunt capacitance
calculated in
(f) is connected in the circuit. [16]
7. (a) Describe adjacent arm compensating gauge method of temperature compen-
sation for strain gauges.
(b) A strain gauge bridge comprises of two fixed resistors each of value 120
, one
active gauge and an unstrained temperature compensated gauge. The two
gauges are of unstrained resistance120
and a gauge factor of 2.2. Find the
bridge output voltage for a supply of 3V, when active gauge is subjected to
600µ Strain. (with output open) [10+6]
8. (a) Differentiate between themistors and thermocouples.
(b) Explain the principle and working of total radiation pyrometer
