1. (a) Define and explain the following:
i. proportional limit
ii. Ultimate Tensile Strength
iii. Modules of resilience
iv. Toughness.
(b) Compare Engineering Stress-Engineering Strain with true stress - True strain
curves. [8+8]
2. Discuss the following casting aluminium alloys:
(a) Al-Si
(b) Al-Cu-Si
(c) Al-Mg. [16]
3. (a) Explain why selection of proper type, amount and orientation of fivers is very
important.
(b) A thermoplastic matrix contain 35Wt% of glass fiber. If the density of the
matrix 1.0 g/cc, while that of glass fiber is 2.5g/cc, what is the density of the
composite ? Assume that no voids are present. [10+6]
4. (a) Describe the modelling of the strength of a well-bonded composite wing sta-
tistical principles.
(b) Explain the mechanisms of failures of continuous, aligned, fiber-reinforced
laminate under uniaxial compressive load. [8+8]
5. (a) Explain about Halpin-sai semi enpirical expressions to evaluate transverse
Young’s modulus and longitudinal shear modulus & elasticity calculations.
(b) Explain why the rule of mixtures is not obeyed at higher stresses. [10+6]
6. Discuss the various methods available to produce different varieties of ceramic fibres.
Briefly explain their working principle. Discuss their relative merits and demerits.

7. (a) Explain the major limitations of magnaflux method of NDT.
(b) Explain the limitations of X-ray radiography and Y-ray radiography.
(c) Explain about kie plane strain toughness testing.
8. (a) What are the properties that have made Kevlar/resin composites a suitable
material in automotive and aircraft industries. What are the appliations of
the composites in the aircraft industry.
(b) What is sigma phase? What is its effect on the properties of stain less steels.
