1. With the help of a neat stress-strain diagram for mild steel. Discuss indetail ithe
tensile properties. [16]
2. (a) What alloying elements are commonly used in the commercial aluminium al-
loys? Explain their effect on structure and properties of alloys.
(b) Explain the ways the mechanical properties of aluminium and its alloys be
increased. [8+8]
3. (a) What is aceramet? Give two examples and mention their properties and ap-
plications.
(b) What are multifunctional structural materials? Explain them. [10+6]
4. (a) What are the orthogonal directions for a ply of the laminate?
(b) Discuss Stress/Strain relations for individual piles in a laminate. [4+12]
5. (a) Briefly explain the micro mechanical analysis of composites by the method of
‘cells’.
(b) Discuss in detail the interlaminar fracture of composites. [10+6]
6. (a) Explain why metal matrix composites with continuous fibres are more difficult
to produce than the polymer matrix composites.
(b) Discuss the required properties of fibres, to produce best fibre reinforced com-
posites. [8+8]
7. (a) Explain the importance of fracture toughness in the field of Aerospace indus-
try. Discuss about damage tolerant Al-alloys used in aircrafts & missiles.
(b) Describe the various methods of thickness measurement using ultrasonic waves.
[8+8]
8. (a) Give some of the important properties and applications of composites. What
are the various types of composites? Which type of composites are widely and
commonly used in aerospace industry.
(b) Explain the hot working characteristics of super alloys.
