1. (a) Why is true stress higher then the nominal stress? which stress should an
engineer use when designing a bridge?
(b) What is fracture toughness ? what is its importance? [8+8]
2. (a) What are the characteristics of aluminum-copper alloys ? Explain.
(b) Explain the method of designating wrought aluminium alloys as established
by aluminium association of America. [8+8]
3. (a) Briefly classify ceramic matrix composites and give examples.
(b) Discuss in detail continuous fiber reinforced ceramic matrix composites.[3+13]
4. Discuss critically micromechanics associated with fracture of unidirectional com-
posites with particular emphasis on toughening mechanisms. [16]
5. Distinguish fully between micro mechanical behavior and macro mechanical behav-
ior of a fibre reinforced composite material during service. [16]
6. (a) With regard to properties how do Boron-carbon fibres differ from boron-
tungsten fibres? Explain. Explain their relative merits and demerits.
(b) What are the various on-line methods available for the manufacture of fibres?
Explain any one. [10+6]
7. (a) ‘Toughness becomes important if the loading conditions are dynamic in na-
ture.’Explain.
(b) Explain the term ‘impact toughness’.
(c) Discuss about the varios optical aids used in visual methods of inspection.
What are the advantages and limitations of this method. Explain. [5+3+8]
8. (a) Explain the corrosion resistance of Aluminium and Aluminium alloys.
(b) Explain the physical, chemical, mechanical properties of aluminium. Explain
the age hardening behaviour of these alloys. Explain usuage of these alloys in
aircraft rivets.
