HVDC TRANSMISSION
( Electrical & Electronics Engineering)
Time: 3 Hours Max. Marks 80
Answer any FIVE questions

1. a) What are the advantages of HVDC power transmission for bulk powers from point
to point EHVAC transmission
b) With neat sketches explain the different kinds of D.C. links available.
2. With the help of a neat circuit diagram explain the operation of a 3-phase, 6-pulse,
Graetz’s circuit when operating with a firing angle of 300. Also draw the following
waveforms to scale when working as a rectifier with  = 300.
i) output d.c voltage
ii) valve current
iii) secondary phase current of the converter transformer. And hence estimate the
average d.c voltage on the output side.
3. a) Explain in detail about Individual phase control firing scheme. Also mention the
drawbacks of this scheme.
b) With the help of a block diagram explain the hierarchical control structure for a DC
link.
4. Explain in detail about different sources of reactive power to meet the reactive power
requirement of converters
5. Obtain the mathematical model of a d.c. network and d.c. converter, including
converter controller.
6. a) What are the basic principles of over current protection
b) Discuss the operation of surge arrestors for converter protection
7. Show that the lowest current harmonic generated in a 12-pulse converter of HVDC
link is is of the order 11th. Draw suitable waveforms.
8. a) Mention the configurations and impedance characteristics of various types of AC
filters.
b) Explain in detail the design aspects of a single tuned filter.
