Code No: 3222206 II B. Tech II Semester Regular Examinations, April/May 2009 PRIME MOVERS AND MECHANICAL COMPONENTS ( Instrumentation & Control Engineering ) Time: 3 hours Max Marks: 80 Answer Any FIVE Questions All Questions carry equal marks 1. a) Define the terms i)Impact of jets and ii) Jet propulsion b) A pelton wheel is to be designed for a head of 60M when running at 200rpm . The pelton wheel develops 95.6475KW shaft power. The velocity of buckets=0.45 times of jets, overall efficiency is 85% and Cv=0.98 [6+10] 2. a) Define slip, percentage slip and negative slip of reciprocating pump. b) Why is it that the speed of a reciprocating pump with out air vessels is not high? Explain with sketches. [6+10] 3. a) With a neat sketch explain the working of a centrifugal pump. b)A Centrifugal pump with 1.2 m diameter runs at 200rpm and pumps 1880 liters/sec, the average lift being 6 m .The angle which the vanes make at exit with the tangent to the impeller is 26o and the radial velocity of flow is 2.5 m/s .Determine the monometric efficiency and the least speed to start pumping against a head of 6 m, the inner diameter of the impeller being 0.6 m [8+8] 4. a) How are boilers classified? Give comparision between “Fire-tube and water-tube” boilers. b) Explain with a neat sketch the working of Babcock and Wilcox boiler [8+8] 5. a) Describe with a neat sketch water level indicator for a boiler b) Explain the function of the super heater? Describe sugden super heater [8+8] 6. a) Explain the difference between impulse turbine and reaction turbine. b) The following data relate to a simple stage impulse turbine. Steam velocity=600m/s; Blade speed = 250 m/s; Nozzle angle =20o; Blade outlet angle=25o .Neglecting the effect of friction calculate the work developed by the turbine for the steam flow rate of 20 kg/sec. Also calculate axial thrust on the bearings 7. a) Describe with a neat sketch the working of a simple constant pressure open cycle gas turbine b) List the methods of improving the efficiency and specific output of a simple gas turbine [8+8] 8. a) Write short notes on the following i) Blow-offcock ii) Steam separator iii) Kinematic chains iv) Change mechanism
