Course: B.Tech Electrical and Electronics Engineering   University: Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University

Code No: R05420203 Set No. 4
IV B.Tech II Semester Regular Examinations, Apr/May 2009
HVDC TRANSMISSION
(Electrical & Electronic Engineering)
Time: 3 hours Max Marks: 80
Answer any FIVE Questions
All Questions carry equal marks
? ? ? ? ?
1. (a) Briefly explain the different types of DC links and why homo polar links are
mostly used?
(b) Explain the importance of a HVDC converter station, in the whole scheme of
HVDC transmission. [8+8]
2. (a) A six pulse converter is connected to a transformer whose valve side AC voltage
is 141.1 KV (peak value phase to phase). The leakage reactance of converter
transformer is 10 ohms per phase. Calculate DC short circuit current when
firing angle is 300.
(b) Derive V-I characteristics for an inverter operating with constant advance
angle. Show these characteristics in V-I plane. [8+8]
3. (a) Distinguish between constant voltage and constant current controls.
(b) What are the basic characteristics of converter control? With the aid of V-I
characteristics, explain how power flow control is achieved? [8+8]
4. What are the advantages of a TSC and a fixed capacitor? Give the schematic
of a single phase TSC and illustrate the loss comparison between FC/TCR and
TSC/TCR. [16]
5. What do you understand by a load flow? Is the load flow chart different for a DC
load flow as compared to AC load flow? [16]
6. (a) What do you understand by commutation failure in HVDC converters?
(b) When does commutation failure in HVDC converter is said to be double com-
mutation failure. Draw the value voltage waveforms. [8+8]
7. (a) Write short notes on characteristic and non characteristic harmonics that ex-
ists in HVDC system.
(b) Using fourier analysis obtain equation for primary current of transformers
connected to 12 pulse converter. Give the inference from the equations derived.
[8+8]
8. How do you design a low pass filter? What precamtions do you take?
