2009 Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University Mechanical Engineering Jntu Hyderabad,Code No: R05320305 , III B.Tech II Semester Regular Examinations, Apr/May 2009 ,DESIGN OF MACHINE MEMBERS-II Question paper

Course: B.Tech Mechanical Engineering   University: Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University

Code No: R05320305 Set No. 1
III B.Tech II Semester Regular Examinations, Apr/May 2009
DESIGN OF MACHINE MEMBERS-II
( Common to Mechanical Engineering and Production Engineering)
Time: 3 hours Max Marks: 80
Answer any FIVE Questions
All Questions carry equal marks
? ? ? ? ?
1. (a) Explain the principle of hydrodynamic lubrication.
(b) Select a single row deep groove ball bearing for a radial load of 4000N and an
axial load of 5000 N, operating at a speed of 1600r.p.m for an average life of
5 years at 10 hours per day. Assume uniform and steady load. [6+10]
2. (a) Under what forces the big end bolt and caps are designed?
(b) The following data refer to a 4-stroke cycle, single cylinder diesel engine
Suction pressure=0.095MPa
Cylinder diameter =200mm
Stroke=200mm
Ratio of compression=15
Engine speed =7450rpm
Equivalent mass of reciprocating parts 2N/sq.mm of piston area
Ratio of connecting rod length to crank length is 4
Design Nickel steel connecting rod of I section choosing the suitable
values for the permissible stresses for the material. [4+12]
3. Design a suitable aluminum alloy piston with two compression rings and one oil
ring for a petrol engine of following particulars:
Cylinder diameter =0.1m
Peak gas pressure =3.2MPa.
Mean effective pressure = 0.8 MPa
Average side thrust = 2400N
Skirt bearing pressure = 0.22MPa
Bending stress in piston crown =36MPa
Crown temperature difference = 70oC
Heat dissipated thorough crown = 157kJ/m2s
Allowable radial pressure = 0.04MPa
Bending Stress in rings = 90MPa
Heat conductivity = 160W/m/oC.
Draw a full scale dimensioned drawing and indicate the method of reducing the
thermal expansion in the skirt of designed piston. [16]
4. A load P=15 kN is applied on a C-clamp as shown in the figure 4. Determine the
stresses at the points A and B.5. (a) On what factors, the design of belts depends?
(b) Select a suitable V-belt drive to connect a 7.5kW, 1440 rpm induction motor
to run a fan at approximately 480 rpm for a service of 16hrs per day. The
space available for centre distance is 1000mm. [3+13]
6. A pair of straight teeth spur gears is to be transmit 20kW when the pinion rotates
at 300rpm. The velocity ratio is 1:3. The allowable static stresses for the pinion
and gear materials are 120MPa and 100 MPa respectively. The pinion has 15 teeth
and its face width is 14 times the module. Determine:
(a) Module
(b) Face width and
(c) Pitch circle diameters of both the pinion and the gear from the stand point of
strength only, taking into consideration the effect of the dynamic loading.
The tooth form factor y can be taken as y= 0.154-0.912/no.of teeth and the velocity
factor Cv = 3/(3+v), where v is in m/s. [16]
7. (a) What type of stresses occur in screws
(b) A 50mm triple start square thread with 8mm pitch, is used with a collar having
25mm inner diameter and 90mm outer diameter. The coefficient of friction at
the thread surface and the collar surface may be taken as 0.15. If the screw
is required to be used to raise a load of 20kN; using uniform wear theory for
the collar friction, determine,i. the torque required to raise the load
ii. the torque required to lower the load and
iii. the force required to raise the load, if it is applied at a radius of 500mm.
[4+12]
8. (a) What are the basic requirements of a machine tools?
(b) Explain the design procedure for tailstock.
