1. (a) Explain the fundamental features of a common control system?
(b) Calculate the time taken to dial a 12-digit number in a DTMF telephone when
i. The exchange is capable of receiving DTMF signals ; and
ii. The echange can receive only pulse dialing.
Compare the result with a rotary telephone dialing. [8+8]
2. (a) Derive expression for availability and unavailability figures of single and dual
processor systems?
(b) List four broad categories of enhanced services made available to subscribers
by SPC? Explain. [8+8]
3. (a) A subscriber loop of 18km is to be supported from an exchange that uses
a 40 V battery with a 400
short-circuit protection resistance. Electronic
telephones are used as the subscriber instruments. Determine the wire gauge
that needs to be used.
(b) Explain in detail about telecommunication network topologies? [8+8]
4. (a) Define the following terms
i. Call completion rate
ii. Erlang
iii. Busy hour call attempts
iv. CCS.
(b) A group of 20 servers carry a traffic of 10 erlangs. If the average duration of
a call is three minutes, Calculate the number of calls put through by a single
server and the group as a whole in a one-hour period. [8+8]
5. (a) Describe synchronous Voice Based Modem? What is modem synchronization
and equalization.
(b) What is character synchronization ? Explain asynchronous and Synchronous
Data Formats. [10+6]
6. Explain in detail Mesh, Ring, Star and Bus network topologies in detail . What
are its merits and demerits. [16]
7. (a) What are the objectives of ISDN ? Explain.(b) Describe the conceptual view of ISDN and what is meant by the term digital
pipe.
(c) Discuss ISDN system connections and Interface units. [6+5+5]
8. (a) How does ADSL divide the band width of a twisted pair cable ?
(b) How does ADSL Modulate a Signal?.
(c) What is FTTC and who uses it.
