2009 Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University Electrical and Electronics Engineering Code No: W0201 Set No. 1 II B.Tech I Semester Supplimentary Examinations, May/June 2009 FLUID MECHANICS AND HYDRAULIC MACHINERY (Electrical & Electronic Engineering) Question paper

Course: B.Tech Electrical and Electronics Engineering   University: Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University

Code No: W0201 Set No. 1
II B.Tech I Semester Supplimentary Examinations, May/June 2009
FLUID MECHANICS AND HYDRAULIC MACHINERY
(Electrical & Electronic Engineering)
Time: 3 hours Max Marks: 80
Answer any FIVE Questions
All Questions carry equal marks
? ? ? ? ?
1. (a) State Newton’s equation of viscosity and give examples of its application.
(b) An oil of viscosity 5 poise is used for lubrication between a shaft and sleeve.
The diameter of shaft is 0.5 m and it rotates at 200 rpm. Calculate the horse
power lost in the oil for a sleeve length of 100 mm. The thickness of the oil
film is 1.0 mm. [8+8]
2. (a) State and prove Bernoulli’s theorem. Mention its limitations.
(b) A 300 mm diameter pipe carries water under a head of 20 m with a velocity
of 3.5 m/s. If the axis of the pipe turns through 45o, find the magnitude and
direction of the resultant force at the bend. [8+8]
3. (a) Describe major and minor losses in pipe flow in detail.
(b) Discuss how friction factor various with Reynolds Number.
(c) Two pipes one of 10cm diameter, 200m long and another 15cm diameter, 400m
long are connected in parallel. The friction factors are 0.0075 for the smaller
pipe and 0.006 for the large pipe. The total discharge through the system is 50
lit/sec. Find the discharge and head loss in each pipe. Neglect minor losses.
Calculate the equivalent length of a 20cm diameter having f=0.005. [4+3+9]
4. (a) What do you mean by impact of jet. Explain
(b) Derive an expression for force exerted by the jet on a stationary vertical plate.
(c) A 10cm diameter jet of water exerts a force of 2 KN in the direction of flow
against a stationary flat plate which is inclained at an angle of 300 with the
axis of the stream. Find
i. Force normal to the plate
ii. velocity of the jet
iii. mass flow rate of water Kg/sec. [2+6+8]
5. (a) Define mass curve. Explain how the storage capacity of a reservoir is estimated
using a mass curve.
(b) Differentiate between net head and gross head of a turbine with a neat sketch.
List out the efficiencies of a turbine and define them. [8+8]
6. (a) What is draft tube and what are its functions in a reaction turbine.
(b) Derive the equation for work done in Pelton wheel turbine from fundamentals.7. (a) How can we compare the performance of a turbine under different working
conditions
(b) A Pelton wheel turbine works under different working conditions in a hy-
dropower installation. The head changes from 100 m to150 m . What changes
can be expected in speed, discharge and power if the efficiency is to remain
same under homologous conditions. [6+10]
8. (a) What are different efficiencies associated with working of a centrifugal pump?
Explain the use of NPSH in the working of centrifugal pump.
(b) The diameter of the piston and stroke length of a reciprocating pump are 200
mm and 300 mm respectively. The pump delivers water at a rate of 7.36 litres
/ sec and the speed is 50 rpm .The suction and delivery heads are 3.5m and
11.5m respectively. Determine
i. Coefficient of discharge
ii. Percentage slip of the pump and
iii. Power required to run the pump
