1. (a) Differentiate between inductive effect and resonance effects giving examples
(b) Explain why ammonia is a weaker base than diethylamine ? [8+8]
2. (a) What are electrophiles? Explain the different types giving examples.
(b) Explain why electrophilic substitution reactions take place in benzene? [8+8]
3. (a) Discuss the reaction between acetone and p-dimethylaminobenzaldehyde in
the presence of aq.ethanolic NaOH.
(b) Outline a laboratory method for the preparation of Cinnamic acid? [8+8]
4. (a) Describe any two methods for radical generation.
(b) Give one example for neutral radical, cation radical and anion radical.
(c) Describe the thermal halogenation of ethane. [6+6+4]
5. (a) What is geometrical isomerism in organic compounds due to?
(b) Explain the E-Z system of nomenclature for geometrical isomers giving exam-
ples. [10+6]
6. Describe the preparation, properties and use of:
(a) Teflon and
(b) Nylon. [8+8]
7. Formulate the following reactions and give explanation for the formation of respec-
tive products:-
(a) Furfuraldehyde is treated with Conc. HNO3 at RT
(b) 2-Methylquinoline is heated with benzaldehyde at 1500C
(c) Pyrrole is treated at room temperature with pyridine SO3 complex
(d) Thiophene is heated with a mixture of KOH and CHCl3 followed by hydrolysis.

8. (a) If a compound does not show absorption in the UV region of electromagnetic
spectrum, can it exhibit the property of colour?
(b) Draw the resonance structures of Bismark - Brown - R.
