01. What is the difference between intensive and extensive properties ? Give examples.

02. Briefly explain the first law of thermodynamics.

03. What is the function of a carburetter ?

04. Give the advantages and disadvantages of air refrigeration.

05. What are the different types of gears? What is a reverted gear train ?

06. What is slip in belt drives ? What is its effect on velocity ratio?

07. Differentiate between impulse and reaction turbines.

08. How do you select a hydraulic turbine based on head available?

09. List the different operations that can be performed on a lathe.

10. What are the common defects that are seen in sand casting?

(a) Derive the expressions for work done in a (a) isothermal process, (b) polytropic process.

(b) Explain the Carnot cycle and give its significance. Obtain an expression for the efficiency of the Carnot cycle.

(a) Explain the working of a 4-stroke diesel engine with the help of sketches.

OR

(b) With the help of a diagram explain vapour absorption refrigeration systems.

13.
(a) An open belt drive transmits 36kW with a belt velocity of 5m/s. Determine the tensions on each side of the belt, if the co-efficient of friction is 0.3 and the angle of lap is 180 degree.

OR

(b) Give the comparison listing the fields of application of flat belt, V-belt, gear and rope drives.

(a) Explain the working of a steam turbine. What is compounding in steam turbines ?

OR

(b) Explain the various non-conventional sources of energy. Give their merits and limitations.

15.
(a) What is rolling process ? With the help of sketches ,explain two high, three high, and four high rolling mills.

OR

(b) What are the classifications of milling machines ? With a sketch explain the different parts of a horizontal milling machine.
