B.TECH. DEGREE EXAMINATION, APRIL/MAY 2009 (First and Second semester)
BASIC ELECTRONICS ENGINEERING (Common for all Branches)
Time: Three Hours ; Maximum: 100 marks -------------------------------------------------------
Part A ----- [10 x 4 = 40 marks] (Answer all questions briefly .Each Question carries 4 marks.)
01. What are active and passive components ? Name atleast two in each category.
02. Explain any four electrical properties of semiconductors.
03. Draw the functional blocks in an eliminator circuit
04. Calculate the a and ß of a transistor having emitter current 2 mA and base current 18µA.
05. Describe the value of the frequency ranges RF, VHF and UHF used in electronic communication.
06. Briefly describe the CRT scanning principle in a TV.
07. What is a thermistor ? Why it is well suited to precision measurement, control and compensation?
08. What are universal logic gates ? Why they are called so ?
09. Explain the different types of ROM, bringing out their features briefly.
10. Define and distinguish between compilers and assemblers.
--------------------------------------- Part B. ----- [5 x 12 = 60 marks]. Answer either A or B section of each module. Each full question carries 12 marks.
11. (a) With neat sketches, explain the construction of an electrolytic capacitor. What are its important features and applications?

(b) Describe p type and n type semiconductors and explain how they produce a contact potential when a pn junction is formed.
12. (a) Draw the circuit diagram and describe the operation with the help of necessary waveforms of a bridge rectifier. Compare its performance with that of a centre tapped circuit.
OR
(b) Sketch the input and output charectristics of a CB configuration and explain . Label the important operating regions on them.
13. (a) (1) With the help of waveforms explain FM. ---- [4 marks] (2) Draw the block diagram of an AM transmitter and explain each block. -- [8 marks]

(b) Draw the block diagram of a monochrome TV receiver and explain the function of each block.
14. (A) With neat diagrams ,describe the principle of strain guages. Explain any two types and their applications.

(B) (a) Solve the following problems given in binary form: (1) 110101 + 111111 , (2) 10000 - 1111. (3) 1010 x 1101 , (4) 1101 / 101 --------- [8 marks] (b) Perform the following conversion, show all steps: (1) (359) base10 = (?)base 8 ; (2) (362)base8 = (?)base2. -------- [4 marks] 15. (a) (1) Describe briefly the operations of any two types of output devices used in a digital computer -- [6 marks] (2) What is a hard disc? Explain the organisation and formatting of a hard disk.[6 marks]

(b) (1) Explain the principle of operation of a mouse. [6 marks] (2) Define and distinguish between Machine, Assembly and High-level languages. [6 marks]
