PAPER 1-RESEARCH METHODOLOGY
Time: Three hours maximum: 100 marks PARTA-(5× 5 =25 marks) Answer all questions. 1. Give a concise account of presenting a scientific seminar. 2. differentiate the following : (a) Linear regression and polynomial regression. (b) Environmental errors and Gaussian curve of errors. 3. Construct a group multiplication table for c3v point group by taking NH3 as an example. 4. Explain the principle of separation of cations and anions of different capacity by ion-exchange chromatography. 5. Discuss briefly Fourier transform spectroscopy what are its advantages? PART B-(5× 5 =75 marks) Answer all questions. 6. (a)(i) List and explain the conditions that would be useful for the formulation of significant research problems. (ii) Discuss in detail the various contents of a research paper. Or (b) Explain the following: (i) Footnoting. (ii) Literature survey (iii) Presenting a scientific seminar. (5+5+5) 7. (a) (i) what is meant by correlation coefficient? How is it calculated? Mention its importance. (ii) How is the method of least squares able to give the best fit line for a set of data? (iii) Explain the term “Histogram” .IIIustrate the gross errors with suitable example. Or (b)(i) Define, mean, median, average deviation and standard deviation. (ii) By taking a suitable examples, explain the terms confidence interval and confidence level. Also explain the rejection of data based upon confidence intervals. 7. (a) (i) write down the symmetry point groups of water and benzene molecules. IIIustrate the improper rotation with a suitable example. (ii) Write a concise note on the matrix representation of symmetry operations. (iii) Construct a character table for a point group C2v by taking water molecule as on example. Or (b) (i) what information is conveyed by a character table? (ii) Write notes on: (1) Site symmetry effect (2) Solid –state effects (3) Correlation field effect. 9. (a) (i) give any two requirements of an adsorbent in column chromatography. How is TLC superior over paper chromatography? (ii) Outline the different theories of development of chromatogram. (iii) Explain the batch method and column method ion-exchange chromatography. Or (b)(i) Discuss the principles of cation and anion exchangers used in ion-exchange chromatography with explain. (ii) What are the basis principles involved in the separation of components by HPLC? Explain each of them briefly. (iii) Given an account of GC-MS. 10. (a) (i) state and explain beer-Lambert’s law, what is meant by selection of analytical wavelength? (ii) Give an account of spectrophotometer accuracy (iii) Explain the derivate spectroscopy. Or (b) (i) explain the relative concentration error. (ii) Describe briefly the Fourier transform infrared and Raman spectroscopy and their applications.
