Paper I- research methodology Time: three hours maximum: 100 marks PARTA-(5 5=25 marks) Answer all questions. 1. What is a hypothesis? What are the characteristics it should possess in order to be a good research hypothesis? 2. Explain the various causes for instrumental erroes. 3. How would you systematically proceed to find out the point group of a molecule? 4. Name the detectors used in GLC and HPLC. Explain the function of any one detector used in GLC. 5. Discuss briefly the enhancement of spectra computer averaging. PART B_ (5 5-75 marks) Answer all questions 6. (a) (i) what is meant by applied research? Mention the various web world search engines which are used in literature survey? (ii) Explain how you would select a research problem. Or (b) (i) write a short note on the art of writing of a thesis. (ii) Discuss the following: (1) Presenting a scientific seminar. (2) Publication of a research paper. 7. (a)(i) What is linear regression? Mention its use. Explain the term standard deviation. (ii) Discuss briefly the variance and standard deviation of combination of components. (iii) Distinguish between environmental errors and observational errors. (b) (i) write a note on the various methods used for rejection of data. (ii)Explain the following: (1) Limiting errors (2) Relative limiting error. (3) Combination of quantities with limiting errors. 8. (a) (i) what are irreducible representations? Explain sub groups with a suitable example. (ii) Derive the matrix form for CN as CosØ sinØ 0 -sinØ cosØ 0 0 0 0 (iii) Explain the distribution of fundamentals among the symmetry species with a suitable example. (b)(i) Write an essay on various molecular vibrations. (ii) Construct the character tables for C3v point group. 9. (A) What is Rf value? Write its significance. List two important characteristics for ion-exchange resins. (ii) List and explain the factors, which affect the separation factor in ion-exchange chromatography. (iii) Explain the terms resolution and efficiency of a chromatographic column. How will you improve these factors? Or (b) (i) write an account on the mechanism involved in the separation of components by paper chromatography. (ii) Discuss the principles used in ion-exchange chromatography. (iii) How is TLC technique superior over other chromatographic techniques? 10. (a) (i) what is meant by time –resolved Fourier transform spectroscopy. Explain the application of In-situ reaction analysis. (ii) Explain what is meant by simultaneous spectro photometric determination. (iii) Discuss briefly the photometric precision. Or (b) (i) state and explain the fundamental laws of photometry. What are their limitations? (ii) discuss pulsed Fourier transform spectrograph.
