III B.Tech II Semester Supplimentary Examinations, Aug/Sep 2007 FOUNDRY AND WELDING (Production Engineering) Time: 3 hours Max Marks: 80 Answer any FIVE Questions All Questions carry equal marks
1. (a) Explain the following pattern allowances. i. Shrinkage ii. Machining (b) Explain the essential properties of sand used for making cores in sand moulding. [8+8]
2. (a) Explain with a neat sketch working of a Cupola. (b) Explain the causes and remedies of the following sand casting defects i. Misrun and cold shuts ii. sand inclusions iii. Hot- Tears iv. Metal penetration.[8+8]
3. (a) What are the factors through which directional solidi?cation of castings can be controlled? (b) What are the advantages of blind riser over conventional type riser? (c) What are the various elements that comprise of the gating system? [6+5+5]
4. (a) Explain the factors to be considered in selection of weld joint. (b) Explain various welding positions. (c) Explain various types of welds with neat sketches.[4+4+8]
5. Explain in detail the Thermit welding process with a neat sketch. Also mention its advantages and limitations. [16]
6. (a) Explain the reasons for estimating welding costs. (b) Discuss the factors involved in welding costs. [8+8]
7. (a) What are the various methods of molding plastics? Describe Ram type and screw type injection molding processes with neat sketches. (b) Name any six types of thermosetting plastics, give their advantages, limitations and applications. [8+8]
8. (a) Among the Various methods used for the manufacture of metal powders which method do you think to be superior ? Why? (b) Write a detailed account on liquid phase sintering. [8+8]
