OPTIONAL ENGLIGH – II

Time: 3 Hours Max. Marks: 90

SECTION-A

1. Annote any three of the following: (3x5=15)

i) Like Cato, give his little Senate Laws,
And sit attentive to his own applause;
While Wits and Templars ev’ry sentence raise,
And wonder with a foolish face of praise.

ii) But most thro’ midnight streets I hear
How the youthful Harlot’s curse
Blasts the new born infant’s tear,
And blights with plagues the Marriage hearse

iii) Their colours and their forms, were then to me
An appetite; a feeling and a love,
That had no need of a remotes charm,
By thought supplied, nor any interest
Unborrowed from the eye.

iv) Like the bright hair uplifted from the head
Of some fierce Maenad, even from the dim verge
Of the horizon to the zenith’s height,
The locks of the approaching storm.

v) All breathing human passion far above,
That leaves a heart high-sorrowful and cloy’d
A burning forehead, and a parching tongue.


SECTION-B

2. Answer the following:

a) How does “Tintern Abvbey” trace Wordsworth’s emotional and spiritual development?

OR

b) Bring out the contrast between the world of art and real life in Keats ‘Ode on a Grecian Urn’. Which does Keats feel is superior? Why?
c) Write short notes on any one of the following.
i) The use of heroic couplets for satire in the 18th century.
ii) A Red Red Rose.
iii) Shelley’s sense of helplessness to effect social change.

(Novel – Pride and Prejudice)

3. Answer the following:

a) Compare and contrast the characters of Jane and Elizabeth.
OR
b) Comment on Jane Austen’s treatment of marriage and property themes in the novel.
c) Write short notes on any one of the following:
i) George Wickham.
ii) Jane Austen’s use of letters as a narrative device.
iii) Collins’ proposal to Elizebath.

SECTION-D
(Prose)

4. Answer the following.
a) Consider De Johnson’ letter as a powerful indictment of the system of patronage in the 18th century.
OR

b) ‘Dream Children’: A Reverie reveals Lamb as a lover of domestic life and children. Discuss.

d) Write short notes on any one of the following:
i) Dr. Johnson’s tone in his letter to the earl of Chesterfield.
ii) Poetic truth versus the truth of science.
iii) Mes Field.

(Aspects of Language)

Answer all the following questions:

1. a) Identify a verbless clause, a non finite clause and a finite clause in the following: 3

i) She sang melodiously.
ii) To Speak the truth requires courage.
iii) Lakhs of people were killed by the Tsunami, mostly children.

b) What is a finite clause? Give an example. 2

c) Identify the main clause and subordinate clause in the following sentence: 3

I am delighted that you passed your exam.

2) a) What is Discourse?
b) Read the following passage and answer the questions below:

Some 33 years after the Indian government abolished privy purses and spelt the end of the princely order, the traditional royalty of India’s Northeast is stirring up to a new awakening. In Meghalaya and Assam, the Kings and chiefs have started mobilizing support to push for the constitutional and legal recognition of what they term “the age-old institution of kingship”. They also want regular monthly allowances to help them maintain their royal status.

i) Pick out one example of synonym in the passage 1
ii) Pick out one example of reference from the passage 1
iii) Pick out how some of the devices of lexical and grammatical cohesion contribute to the coherence of the passage 3
