III B.Tech II Semester Supplimentary Examinations, Aug/Sep 2007 PLASTICS AND POLYMERIC MATERIALS (Metallurgy & Material Technology) Time: 3 hours Max Marks: 80 Answer any FIVE Questions All Questions carry equal marks ?????

1. (a) What are special properties of plastics that make them useful in Engineering materials? (b) What are lenier polymers? Explain the di?erences between addition and condensation polymerization. [8+8]

2. (a) List and Explain the factors that promote non crystallinity chain polymers. [6] (b) Explain how does i. solvents and ii. Catalysts a?ect the performance of polymers.

3. (a) What do you mean by virgin polymer or virgin resin. (b) What are the various ingredients ?added to virgin polymers before processing and (c) Explain the e?ect of di?erent ingredients incorporated to virgin polymers to improve their properties. [4+6+6]

4. (a) What are the functions of the following in plastics i. Kaolin ii. Alumina Trihydrate iii. Metal ?laments (b) What are i. Blowing agents and ii. Sizing agents. What is their use in plastic manufacturing. [7] [2x5=10]

5. (a) The common copolymer is produced by including both ethylene and propylene monomers in the same chain. Calculate the molecular weight of the polymer produced using 1 kg of ethylene and 3 kg of propylene giving a degree of polymerization of 5000. (b) The distance between the centers of the two adjacent carbon atoms in linear polymers is approximately 0.15nm. Calculate the length of an ultra high molecular weight polyethylene chain that has a molecular weight of 1,000,000 gm/mole. [8+8]

6. (a) What are some of the advantages of thermosetting plastics for Engineering design applications? What is the major disadvantage of thermosets which thermo plastics do not have? (b) What are the major processing methods used for thermo sets. Explain[10+6]

7. (a) What are the important Engineering applications of Acetals (b) What type of materials have acetals commonly replaced? Why. (c) Explain carother’s Equation.

8. (a) What is silicone. (b) Explain the important properties of silicon. (c) Explain the following types of Nylons. i. Nylon ?6 ii. Nylon 10.
