1. Define open system. Write its examples.
2. What is meant by term heat capacity? Write expressions for the heat capacities at constant volume and pressure.
3. Define standard state.
4. Write the statement of Hess's Law.
5. What is Claussius inequality? Write its significance.
6. Explain Enthalpy of neutralization with suitable examples.
7. Write the statement of Le Chateleir's principle.
8. Define the term phase, with suitable example, in phase rule.
9. Mention thermodynamic concepts of mass and molar mass.
10. Distinguish between atmospheric and osmotic pressures.

1. Show that dE is an exact differential whereas dw and dq are not.
2. State and explain first law of thermodynamics.
3. Derive the expression for the Work Done in case of adiabatic reversible expansion of an ideal gas.
4. State and illustrate Nernst heat theorem.
5. Write the statements of second law of thermodynamics.
6. Write about the concept of residual entropy.
7. Derive Claussius-Clapeyron equation.
8. Deduce thermodynamic derivation of law of mass action.
9. Calculate the heat of vaporisation of benzene at 80"C if its molal boiling point elevation constant is 2.63
10. Explain thermodynamic scale of temperature.

1. (a) Draw Carnot cycle. Show that the Work done in this cycle is maximum. (b) refer to attachment
2. (a) Establish thermodynamic relationship between molecular weight of a non-volatile solute and depression of freezing point of a solvent. (b) Calculate the work done, w if one mole of an ideal gas is expanded isothermally and reversibly at 37"C (degree celsius) from a volume of 3.2 litres to 6.4 litres.
3. (a) Show that the Joule-Thompson expansion is isenthalpic as well as adiabatic. (b) Discuss the application of phase rule for water system.
4. (a) Derive Gibbs-Duhem equation. (b) State and explain Raoult's law of relative lowering of vapour pressure.
