M.A.English (Previous) DEGREE EXAMINATION, DECEMBER 2006 Paper IV - MODERN LITERATURE - II (1700 - 1850)
Time : Three hours Maximum : 100 marks
Q.No.1 in Unit I is compulsory. Answer any TWO questions from Unit II and TWO questions from Unit III. All questions carry equal marks. UNIT I
1. Annotate any FOUR of the following: (4 x 5 = 20)
(a) She cannot fade, though thou hast not thy bliss, For ever with thou love, and she be fair!
(b) Oh there is blessing in this gentle breeze, A visitant that while it fans my cheek Dath seen half-conscious of the Joy it brings From the green field, and from your azure sky.
(c) Let him be answered, that Addison speaks the language of poets, and Shakespeare of men.
(d) Why, thou unblushing revel - didn.t tell this gentleman to his face that you love another better? Didn.t you say you never would be his?
(e) Where are the songs of spring? Ay, where are they? Think not of them thou hast thy music too;
(f) Meanwhile, my hope has been that I might fetch Invigorating thought from former years, Might fix the wavering balance of my mind...
(g) His comedy pleases by the thoughts and the language, and his tragedy for the greater part by incidents and action.
(h) Men have no sense now but for the worthless flower of beauty!
UNIT II - (2 X 20 = 40 marks)
2. How does 'Ode on a Grecian Urn' treat the primordial theme of permanence and evanescence?
3. Examine The Prelude as a poem on ‘The growth of a poet’s mind’.
4. Does Johnson present in his Preface a balanced view of Shakespeare’ art and achievement? Justify your view.
5. Examine The Rivals as a social and realistic comedy.
6. Write about the influence of French Theatre on English drama of the eighteenth century.
UNIT III - (2 X 20 = 40 marks)
7. Write a critical note on the dramatic organization of The Rape of the Lock.
8. 'The Rime of the Ancient Mariner' is the story of crime, punishment and purification.. - Discuss.
9. ‘Adonais. is a song of grief with a succession of dream pictures exquisitely beautiful’. Comment.
10. Explain the blending of humour and pathos in Essays of Elia.
11. Discuss the unusual plot and characterization in She Stoops to conquer.
12. 'Emma's theme is pilgrimage from illusion to reality' - Elaborate.
13. Write short notes on any FOUR of the following: (a) Restoration comedy (b) Mrs Malaporp (c) Supernatural element in 'The Rime of the Ancient Mariner' (d) Personal Essay (e) Belinda (f) .Beauty is truth, truth beauty. (g) Romanticism (h) Word worth’ attitude to nature.
