IF 451- HIGH PERFORMANCE NETWORKS
Time: Three hours Maximum : 100 marks
Answer ALL questions
PART A – (10X2=20 MARKS)
1. Is there any time –bounded service provided by MAC layer? Explain.
2. Give the different states where a device can stay in an application of ad hoc
architecture.
3. List out the versions in physical layer of IEEE 802.11 standard.
4. Highlight the features of transmitting end in fiber optic link.
5. Give the features of connection- oriented services with a neat sketch.
6. Where multiplexing is required? Explain.
7. Why ISDN comprises channels? Explain.
8. Explain error detection and error control in ATM.
9. Locate where WDM is required. What is it?
10. How wireless networks performance is evaluated?
PART B – (5 X 16 =80 Marks)
11. (a) (i) Apply ALL sub protocols with an application and explain each.. (10)
(ii) Design a simple ATM network with ten entities and highlight their IP
address allocations and other required parameters.. (6)
12. (a) How error control is dealt by
(i) Alternating Bit Protocol
(ii) Go Back N Protocol.
(iii) Selective Repeat protocol.

(b) Where switching is done, classify relating with an application? (16)
13. (a) Explain ISDN protocol architecture in detail (16)

(b) Highlight the features of channel access control sub layer of HIPERLAN (16)
14. (a) Sketch the WATM reference model and explain its features in detail. (16)
Or
(b) In a packed-switched network, the transmission line is shared by many users. How many user’s e-mail needs can be accommodated by a shared 9.5-Kbps line? Assume that the average e-mail message consists of text composed by typing and copying an existing file in the proportion of 1 to 5. (16)
15. (a) What is the cause for attenuation and dispersion in fiber optics? Whether they are
desired effects? Explain in detail. (16)

(b) (i) In wavelength assignment system why static why static allotment is not
considered? What about Blocking? (8)
(ii) How hierarchical mesh networks differ from others in fiber optics? (8)
