1. (a) Explain briefly the concept of free electron gas
(b) Explain Dipole moment
(c) The enthalpy of fusion of the in 6.02 kJ/mole, hydrogen bond energy is 2.05
kJ/mole and there are two moles of hydrogen bonds per mole of H2O in ice.
Estimate the fraction of hydrogen bonds are broken when ice melts. [6+4+6]
2. (a) State the different diffraction methods of determining the structures and give
their advantages and disadvantages if any.
(b) Find the Miller indices of a plain that makes an intercept of 1 on a- axis and

energy (enthalpy) of copper.

5. (a) Describe the transformation of austenite to martensite and compare it to
pearlitic and bainitic transformation.
(b) Discuss about the effect of alloying elements on the properties of steel. [8+8]

7. (a) What is creep? Draw a typical creep curve and explain the different stages of
creep.
(b) Describe the methods for protection against fracture. [8+8]
