1. (a) Make a plot of the melting points and boiling points of materials of different
bonding characteristics as a function of their bond length.
(b) Explain why the increasing trend of melting and boiling points show a reversal
after silicon, even through the bond energy continues to increase. [8+8]
2. (a) Mention and explain various steps to determine the structure of crystals.
(b) State how to determine lattice parameter of a cubic crystal by the diffraction
method. [8+8]
3. (a) What is dislocation climb?
(b) Explain jogs in dislocation.
(c) Explain Frank-Read source of dislocation. [4+6+6]
4. What is the effect of the following operations on the microstructure and mechanical
properties of a ductile single-phase alloy initially in the cast and annealed condition?
(a) Increasing amount of cold work
(b) Annealing at successively higher temperatures after cold-work. [16]
5. (a) Describe the time-temperature-transformation characteristics of the eutectoid
steel with a suitable diagram.
(b) Describe the transformation of austenite to martensite and compare it to
pearlitic and bainitic transformation. [8+8]
6. (a) Define elastic deformation and anelastic deformation.
(b) Define Poisson’s ratio and shear modulus.
(c) Discuss about the relationship between bond character and elastic modulus of
various materials. [4+4+8]
7. What are composite materials? What are the different types of composite materi-
als? Describe each one of them. [16]
8. (a) Explain how a galvanic couple at microstructure level may form from two
different phases in the same material and result in corrosion.
(b) How does corrosion rate vary with tempering temperature? Explain with a
neat figure.
