II B.Tech II Semester Supplimentary Examinations, Aug/Sep 2007 CHEMICAL ENGINEERING THERMODYNAMICS-I (Chemical Engineering) Time: 3 hours Max Marks: 80 Answer any FIVE Questions All Questions carry equal marks ? ? ? ? ? 1. (a) Define gauge pressure and absolute pressure. (b) The pressure of a gas in a pipe line is measured with a mercury manometer having one limb open to the atmosphere. If the difference in the height of mercury in the two limbs is 562 mm, calculate the gas pressure. The barometer reads 761 mm Hg, the acceleration due to gravity is 9.79m/s 2, and the density of mercury is 13,640 kg/m 3. [6+10] 2. A system is taken from state 1 to state 2 along a path A. During this process it received 200 kJ energy as heat and does 100 kJ work. If the system is taken from state 2 to state 1 by a different path B, it is necessary to spend 150 kJ work on the system. Determine the heat interaction along the path B. Suppose the system is restored to state 1 from state 2 by an adiabatic path C, how much work has to the done on the system? [16] 3. Find the density of chlorine gas at 155 bar and 521K, using the compressibility factor chart. Data M.W = 70.91, w = 0.090, Tc = 417K, Pc = 77.1bar. [16] 4. Steam at 0.5MPa and 2020 C enters a nozzle with a velocity of 1m/s at the rate of 1kg/s and leaves as dry saturated steam at 0.1MPa. The energy loss as heat from the nozzle is 10.3kJ/s. Calculate the exit velocity of steam. [16] 5. Two Carnot engines A and B are connected in series between two thermal reservoirs at 1100K and 110K respectively. Engine A receives 1720 kJ of heat from the high temperature reservoir and rejects heat to the Carnot engine B. Engine B takes in heat rejected by engine A and rejects heat to the low temperature reservoir. If engines A and B have equal thermal efficiencies, determine (a) the heat rejected by engine B, (b) the temperature at which heat is rejected by engine A. [16] 6. One kg of water at 277 K is brought into contact with a heat reservoir at 377 K. When the water has reached 377 K, find the entropy change of the water, of the reservoir, and of the universe. Specific heat of water is 4.187 kJ kg-1K-1. [16] 7. A refrigeration plant produces 0.14 kg/s of the ice at -60C from water at 280C. If the power required to drive the plant is 25kW, determine the capacity of the ice plant in tones and the actual COP. Cp of ice is 2.1 kJ kg-1 K-1. [16] 8. Discuss in brief generalized correlation of thermodynamic properties for gass. [16] ? ? ? ? ? 1 of 1
