2007 Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University B.E Chemical PROCESS HEAT TRANSFER SET NO 3 Question paper

Course: B.E Chemical   University: Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University

Code No: R05220802 Set No. 3
II B.Tech II Semester Supplimentary Examinations, Aug/Sep 2007
CHEMICAL ENGINEERING THERMODYNAMICS-I
(Chemical Engineering)
Time: 3 hours Max Marks: 80
Answer any FIVE Questions
All Questions carry equal marks
? ? ? ? ?
1. (a) Discuss open U-tube manometer indicating gauge pressure.
(b) The pressure of a gas in a pipe line is measured with a mercury manometer
having one limb open to the atmosphere. If the difference in the height of
mercury in the two limbs is 650 mm, calculate the gas pressure. The barometer
reads 760 mm Hg, the acceleration due to gravity is 9.79m/s2, and the density
of mercury is 13,640kg/m3. [6+10]
2. (a) Discuss limitation of first law of thermodynamics.
(b) Use the first law to show why leaving the refrigerator door open, will not cool
the kitchen. [7+9]
3. It is desired to design a tank to store 9 kmol methane at 6.0 MPa and 303 K.
Determine the size of the tank using generalized compressibility chart. The critical
constants of methane are Pc = 4.6 MPa and Tc = 190.6K. [16]
4. (a) What is a continuous system and how do we describe the state of such a
system?
(b) Compare and contrast the characteristics of control mass and control volume.
[8+8]
5. A reversible engine operating between a reservoir at 605K and the ambient at-
mosphere at 305 K, drives a refrigerator operating between 245K and the ambient
atmosphere. Determine the ratio of energy rejected by both the devices to the
ambient atmosphere to the energy absorbed by the engine from the reservoir at
605K. [16]
6. A system has a heat capacity at constant volume,
CV =AT2, where A=0.042 JK-3.
The system is originally at 210K, and a thermal reservoir at 110K is available.
What is the maximum amount of work that can be recovered as the system is
cooled down to the temperature of the reservoir? [16]
7. (a) What is a heat pump? List its applications.
(b) Define COP of a heat pump. How it can be increased? [8+8]
8. Define adiabatic compressibility K and show that the ratio of isothermal com-
pressibility K d and adiabatic compressibility is equal to [16]
