1. (a) Write short notes on the following:
i. Selection of a cutting fluid
ii. Application of cutting fluid
iii. Maintenance of cutting fluids.
(b) What is meant by ‘chip formation’?
(c) Explain the tool wear. [9+3+4]
2. (a) What are the applications, achievable accuracies and limitations of the follow-
ing work holding devices:
i. 3 jaw chuck
ii. 4 jaw chuck.
(b) With the help of neat sketch illustrate the principle of single spindle automatic
lathe. [8+8]
3. (a) Explain with a neat sketch the operation and the need for a clapper box in a
mechanical shaper.
(b) A plot measuring 250 mm × 75 mm × 40 mm is to be rough shaped along its
wide face. Calculate the machining time taking approach as 20 mm, over all
travel 20 mm, cutting speed 10 m/min, allowance on either side of plate with
is 5 mm and feed per cycle is 1 mm. [8+8]
4. What is a jig boring machine? Describe its construction and working detail. [16]
5. (a) Sketch and explain the two basic types of milling operations.
(b) Describe the main features of Universal milling machine. [8+8]
6. (a) Sketch and explain the three methods of cylindrical grinding.
(b) What are disk grinders? [12+4]
7. With the help of neat sketches, explain the horizontal pull broaching operation and
the vertical push broaching operation. [16]
8. (a) How are jigs classified? Give a broad classification of drilling jigs you know.
(b) Explain the essential characteristics in proper design of Jigs and Fixtures.
