1. (a) What is the use of chip breakers?
(b) Show schematically Merchant’s force circle in orthogonal cutting. Derive the
equations for shear and friction forces in terms of the material properties
and cutting process parameters. Give in detail the assumptions made while
arriving at the final equations. [4+12]
2. (a) List and explain any five operations that can be done on the engine lathe.
(b) What are the differences between automatic lathe and capstan lathe? [10+6]
3. (a) Sketch and explain the mechanical feed drive of a horizontal shaper.
(b) How is a planer specified? Explain. [10+6]
4. (a) With help of neat block diagram describe the main parts and working of the
Floor type horizontal boring machine.
