CH 131 — CHEMISTRY II
(Common to Textile Technology, Leather Technology, Polymer Technology and Textile Chemistry)
Time : Three hours Maximum : 100 marks
Answer ALL questions.
PART A — (10 ´ 2 = 20 marks)
1. Define the terms BOD and COD.
2. What are the ill effects of noise pollution?
3. Write briefly on classification of fuels with examples.
4. Give the composition and uses of producer gas.
5. Mention any two coal tar products and specify their uses.
6. What are epoxide adhesives? State their characteristics.
7. What is kevlar? State its important applications.
8. What are matrix resins? Give their applications.
9. Write a note on the characteristics and uses of ultramarine.
10. How is silicon carbide prepared? State its unique properties.
PART B — (5 ´ 16 = 80 marks)
11. (i) Describe the manufacture of metallurgical coke by chamber ovens method.
(ii) Explain primary and secondary treatments of wastewater.
12. (a) (i) What is acid rain? Explain its causes, ill effects and control measures. (10)
(ii) Write briefly on ‘smog’. (6)

(b) (i) Describe the process of fractional distillation of petroleum. Indicate the various fractions obtained and their uses. (12)
(ii) What are the differences in characteristics between petrol and diesel? (4)
13. (a) (i) Indicate the various types of lime. Discuss their composition and characteristics. (10)
(ii) Explain the chemistry of setting and hardening of cement. (6)

(b) (i) Write briefly on the characteristics and applications of nylon 6 and PET. (10)
(ii) What are composites? Discuss matrix resins. (6)
14. (a) (i) Describe the types and applications of zeolites. (8)
(ii) What are bleaching agents? Explain the bleaching action of oxidizing bleaching agents with any two examples. (8)

(b) (i) What are refractories? Give any one example and state its preparation, special characteristics and applications. (8)
(ii) Explain the need of solid lubricants. Give one example and discuss its characteristics and uses. (8)
15. Write notes on the following :
(a) (i) Coal gas.
(ii) Polycarbonates.
Or
(b) (i) Pigments.
(ii) Silicone oils.
