What is the meaning of Thirthankara?
A Thirthankara is one who establishes Jain organisation. They have conquered both love & hatred.They are the "Path-Shower" to the living world how to make us free from Ignorance,Misery & Worldly happiness.
Who is a Thirthankaras?
The 24 Thirthankaras are the creator of Jain religion.It is considered that they have attained all the ultimate achievements of the world including ultimate knowledge after making the greatest efforts. the principles which they follow provides betterment & welfare to persons.The path mainly emphasises on total fearlessness, non-violence, distribution of love & friendship.They lead a simple life & had no insistence for anything.They are believed to be noble, generous, passion-free & having very holy characters.
Acharaya Somdev Suri has written in 87th stanza of 'Yashstilakchulikc'
"There are indefinite number of Grahas - nakshatras & stars. But their numbers are shown to be limited by the naturs. In the present era of Utsarpini time span, there are 24 times only when these heavenly elements are positioned in the best location.This is a certainty. Therefore, there are only 24 Thirthankaras."
