As my fellow members have said about GATE exam, I would like to add some information to it. GATE is not at all difficult, as an engineer I can tell you that if you prepare sincerly for even 6 months or 4 depending upon your techinical knowledge, you can easily get through it.
In India the institutes which provide couching for GATE are in enormous number. The best one I would suggest is IES Made Easy, it has two branches, one is in Delhi and other one is in Bangalore.
In my profile you will find previous year GATE exam question papers(in almost every stream) which can help you during your preparations, so if you want a look at previous questions, you can visit my profile.

Hello Balaji Venktesh,
GATE stands for Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering. The main purpose of taking GATE exam is to do M.Tech in reputed institutes like IIT's and NIT's. Some companies like BARC, Indian Oil company looks for GATE qualified students to recruit in their companies. Clearing the GATE exam is not a tough task but getting into top universities is a very difficult as very limited seats are available and if your a OC you need to get a rank of below 500 which is bit difficulty but not impossible.
If your qualified in GATE exam and couldn't get into top universities in that case it is better to go for Job than doing M.Tech in a low grade university which is of no use.
Since the GATE score is valid for 2 years it is better that you take the exam in the third year of your B.Tech itself so that even if you can't make up in the first attempt you still have one more chance to do it without any wastage of year.
All the Best!!

This GATE (Graduate Aptitude Test in engineering) is mainly coordinated by MHRD (Ministry of Human resource Development, Government of India) and implemented by a committee comprising ppl from all the IITs and Indian Institute of Science. These institutes monitor the conduction of the exam and everyyear one IIT/IIsc takes the responsibility of Organizing the same. It was organized by IIT Roorkee in 2009 and by IIT Guwahati in 2010.
The exam will usually be conducted second sunday in the month of february, every year and the results will be announced around mid march (in exactly a month following the examination).
All the Engineering Bachelors and Science Masters are eligible to give the GATE also who are in the pre-final year of the same, and in the specialization of your choice.. (probably your specialization in engineering or master's)..
If you qualaify the GATE, they will give you your individual score and also a percentile score (This indicates your position among the qualified candidates..99 percentile means you are in the top 1% of the qualified..)
If you qualify the GATE, it will not entitle you for admission automatically, but you need to apply to individual institutes after relevant notiphications, which shortlists the candidates (may be on GATE score and other things) and again follow some standard procedures like interview to select the candidates among the applications received and for a particular programme..(your GATE score will be given 70% weightage..rest will be for interview and other things)
If u qualaify GATE..you can do either a Masters(M.Tech/MS) or doctoral (PhD)..If u get admission for M.Tech in any recognized college and if you are GATE qualified...MHRD will pay you a monthly stipend of 8000 INR for entire duration of M.Tech.. The GATE qualification also entitles you to opt for a Masters by Research (MS) or PhD program based on your career and research interests.
M.Tech and MS are of two years..and duration of PhD varies (but usually 3-5 years, may be also 6 in some cases)...(Both MS and PhD are research degrees but in PhD you will be taking more courses and will be doing more research work, in m Tech there is less emphasis on research work but more is of course)
you will have un matched and competitive career prospects after a PhD (even companies prefer PhDs to any other and with a higher start up package too).
All the research labs like CSIR and other functioning under Govt of India makes GATE as a mandatory qualification for all the notified posts(for which the basic qualification is engineering bachelors or science masters) and even if its not mandatory, they will prefer GATE qualified to others.
The first question you encounter when you sit for interview in any course like M.Tech/MS/PhD/Research position/Project position/in any lab is "Do u hav a valid GATE SCore??""
what not, if you qualify GATE, you will stand out of all other even in company interviews, because your knowledge of the subject is certified and this will surely give you an edge over others.
And also if you qualify GATE, you will be entitled for CSIR fellowship in which with the funding of CSIR, you can pursue a PhD in any CSIR lab of your choice..(CSIR-Council for Scientific and Industrial Research, autonomous body under Ministry of Science and Technology, Govt of india is hosting a Chain of labs across india which work on different areas ranging from basic, engineering, life and other sciences). During this funding, it will pay you a monthly stipend(around 12-14k)+HRA, yearly contingency grant(around 20k) and other facilities in your institute.
Not all the above, GATE qualification is mandatory everywhere to avail funding for ur courses and most of the institutes apart from IITs and all also makes it mandatory for admission.
Even if you are not interested in research/project jobs and higher studies, still it gives you a stand out of others even in your job trails, since its an extra qualification for you which is worth mentioning in ur CV and brings you an edge over others in everything as your knowledge of the subject is CERTIFIED..
Coming to the preparation, GATE Exam demands a serious, scheduled, organized and dedicated preparation of not more than 2-3 months. Previous papers will help alot to know the type of questions that will be asked in the examination and the level of difficulty. Mock tests will simulate the actual examination and helps gain confidence to clear the examination with flying colours.
Good Luck and Best Regards

Basically GATE stands for Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering conducted by One of the IIT in coordination with University Graduate Commission (UGC). Based on the score(percentile) obtained in GATE exams you will get admission in various Master degree courses in all IITs, NITs and different engineering colleges across India who offer post graduation courses.
Based on the score obtained in GATE examination UGC will provide monthly stipend which is enough for a person to complete his post graduation.
This GATE examination will conducted on second sunday of february every year and results will be declared by march end.
As fellow members there is not much coaching is required to obtain good score in GATE. We need to be perfect in basics by reading books written by IIT professors from 1st year itself which is enough to get good score.
