India played their first One day International match on 13th July 1974. They played that match against England at Headingly,Leeds. MH Denness, who was the captain of England team won the toss and decided to field first. It was a 55 over match. Batting first, the first wicket of India fell on the score of 44 when Naik was out LBW by Jackman. Soon Gavaskar and Viswanath also got out. At that point the score was 60/3. Then Indian captain A Wadekar and wicket keeper F Engineer steadied the innings and once Engineer departed India were at 130/4. Then came BP Patel and scored a brilliant 78 balls 82(8x4,2x6). Wadekar also scored 67 of 82 balls. India were eventually all out after scoring 265 in 53.5 overs. Chasing a modest total of 266, England lost their first wicket when D Amiss was out LBW by Solkar. But Edrich played a brilliant knock of 90 from 97 balls. England never seemed to be in trouble and they eventually won the match by 4 wickets in 51.1 overs. Solkar and Bedi both got a couple of wickets while Madan Lal and Venkataraghavan got one each. JH Edrich was the player of the match for his match winning knock. Solkar was the most economical bowler giving 31 runs in 11 overs.
