India is such a diverse country that this question becomes very difficult to answer. Even in one city there are safe and unsafe localities. This refers to all places in this world. My daughter is in Houston Texas and she has to keep everything in lock and key as there are frequent break-ins. My son is in State College Pennsylvania and he has never locked his room.

Safe or unsafe city - I wouldn't go by that classification.

A person who conducts himself wisely can be safe in a so-called unsafe city, and an unwise person can turn a 'safe' city to become personal hell. At the least one can take steps to minimize or reduce the bad aspects to a certain extent.

It depends on how one handles situations in the city. It is easy to provoke undesirable consequences by our own conduct in public places, even if we have our rights and freedoms.

An extreme example - I may work hard and earn a good amount, and buy valuables and layer them up all over me like with dazzling diamond ring, thick gold bracelets, chains, swanky watch, and while it is my full right and ownership of these things, if were to walk around the city just to walk around alone, I would likely become a target for some unpleasant reactions.

From another angle - a city may be termed safe. But my workplace in my particular office building and from amongst my coworkers, the safety can be compromised for whatever reasons. I can be a victim living in unsafe circumstances, while statistically my personal situation can get glossed over by the term 'safe' city.

Now for a visitor – one has to mind the local customs and sentiment and adjust accordingly to enjoy that city. What may be acceptable in your hometown may be looked on differently in another place.

That was an overall general view.
To get into the nitty gritty details one would need to figure out his/her mode of operation in different specific situations. I have given a list of some topics. I am sure there is more, but from what I could think of for now. They can actually become separate topics for discussion in ISC.

1. City main areas, fringe areas
2. Crowded places like train/bus stations, markets, religious gatherings
3. Recreation places (beach, park, walkways, sports stadium, theatres/malls)
4. Areas where regular demonstrations take place
5. Vulnerable sections where safety features drop in the evenings with no street lights
5. The usual eve teasers and the like

So hopefully with some preparation and being aware and alert, one can enjoy wherever life may take them and come out smiling!

I have lived in both northern and southern parts of India and I find that south Indian states are safer compared to north Indian states. Maybe the safety is due to the conservative aspects of the region. The metro cities due to their western culture and modernism has given a lack of worth to morality and thus crime rate increases. So it is difficult to classify one state or city as safe but can be given as a whole

Hello,
In terms of safety, Mumbai is the safest city in India according to me. No matter whatever may be the crime level people here feel safe as compared to other cities like Delhi, Kolkatta, Lucknow, etc.

There is no city in this world we can label as safe. As we know there are two sides of a coin, good and bad are everywhere we go. Rather than expecting the place to be safe one thing what we can do from our side is being safe in all aspects.
