Certain numbers which are mentioned in the Bible have long been recognized as having significance like 3, 5, 7, 10, 12.
Let us look at what the Number 40 signifies.
1. The number 40 signifies completion and testing.
Israel had been in the wilderness for 40 years for reasons that included proving or testing (Deut. 8:2).
2. We find the 40 years of testing in the book of Judges (3:11; 5:31; 8:28), in which Israel had been given 40 years of peace and prosperity on various occasions, only to drift back into idolatry and rebellion.
3. Sometimes Israel was given 40 years of punishment (Judges 13:1).
4. Certain kings of Israel reigned for 40 years (II Sam. 5:4; I Kings 11:42; II Kings 12:1).
5. 40 years reign of King Saul, King David and King Solomon.
6. 40 days and nights flood.
7. 40 days fasting by Jesus in the wilderness.

Forty seemed to be used as a "time of testing" number e.g. -
Moses spent 40 years in the palace of Pharaoh (learning how to rule), and then 40 years in the desert with Jethro (learning how to live in the desert) before returning to Egypt for the Exodus.
The Israelites spent forty years in the wilderness before entering the Promised Land (see Wilderness Journey).
Jesus Christ fasted 40 days at the time of his temptation by Satan (see Go Ahead, Jump!).
