Spina bifida occurs due to defect in spinal canal and the surrounding vertebra. Myelomeningocele occurs due to herniation of the neural tube between vertebrae. This results in several symptoms such as urinary retention, gait, abnormal pelvis and sensory loss in limbs. Folic acid capsules are given to the pregnant women to prevent the foetus from myelomeningocele. Treatment of this disease is surgical and a good neurosurgeon should be consulted.
