Hi, For a starter you need to study optical fiber communication just Google it. Also you have to consider light as a particle matter for transmitting. There is a special branch called photonics which deals with data transfer using light as a medium. The light consists of many wavelength choosing any one wavelength you can transfer the data also the intensity of your light determines how well the data can be transferred to the destination. Costly equipments are used to relay the message you need a light encoder and decoder to encrypt and decrypt your message for transmission and receiving the data. Hope you look into optical fiber communication book by any good author you may get the techniques and constraints.
Regards.

Optical fiber is used for long distance communication and it use use large bandwidth.Because instead of electrical wave here we are using light wave and optical transmitter is used to convert an electrical signal into an optical signal.compare to electrical wave the attenuation is very less in light wave and co channel interference is also less ,it carry more information and no cross talk will occur.Multimode optical fiber and single mode optical fiber is used for fiber optic communication.

The optical communication is not particular to 'messaging'. Infact most of the data and voice services today run on optical fibres since other forms of media do not have such large bandwiths. In Optical Fibre Communication(OFC)signal travels as light with multiple reflections inside the fibre. Since no electricity is involved attenuation and interference are not so pronounced as in electrical signals. Speaking of the matter you have mentioned, message is first interpreted to the near end system electrically. This happens by conversion of PNEMONICS to 0s and 1s which are nothing but logical voltages. This stream of voltages is converted to optical signals and carried over to the far end through OFC to get converted back to electrical signals and then to text again.

Fiber Optics is new technology that uses glass or plastic threads to transmit data. Mainly it consists of bundle of glass threads, and it wil transmistt messages through light waves. It has many advantageous over the communication lines which are of metal . It has good bandwidth when compared to metal cables, because they carry more data.

Hi! The function of an optical fibre can briefly explained as here. Optical fibre works on the principle of light that light bends away from normal axis when it moves from optically denser medium to optically lighter medium and when the angle of incidence at the surface is more a particular value, it reflects back into the same medium. Optical fibre is mainly made up of two cylindrical layers the inner one with optically denser medium in the inner region and the optically lighter one over it. It has various protective layers over this. The electrical signals will be encoded into optical signals in the sending end and it will be incident into the optical fibre so that it reflects back into the same medium. The angle and the fibre is so designed so as to make the light reflect into the denser medium at all places. So, the signal travels in the denser medium. The light signal is decoded into electric signals at the receiving end. Many optical fibres running in parallel are used to send huge information. If you need a broader information, google it. Optical fibre has numerous advantages due to which it is most frequently used in communication media. It has high bandwidth, light in weight and easy to carry. These are basically made of plastic or glass fibre and thus serve as non-conductors of electricity. Weather conditions such as rain or lightening has negligible effect on plastic and so they are efficiently used and give minimum transmission loss.
First the message in the form of input is sent to analog or digital interface then it is passed through voltage to current converter and then to light source LED where it is being converted to electrical energy. Then these electrical signals pass through fibre to light detector where light detector converts light energy into current. Then it is passed through current to voltage converter and then interface to get the desired output.

Optical Fiber
Optical fiber is a small component or cable which is used to transfer huge amounts of data through large distances with least or no loss of energy. It works on the principle of internal multiple reflections of light ray.
Structure
Optical fibers are made of high reflecting plastic and coated with rubber or plastic layer. This plastic is usually slightly thicker than a human hair. The plastic which is inside the optical fiber is capable of multiple internal reflections. This means that if you pass a ray of light through an optical fiber, it will undergo multiple reflections and reach the other end at the speed of light.
Uses
With the structure you might have guessed how an optical fiber works. It has the capability of transferring huge data through large distances with the tiniest loss of energy. All the data in an optical fiber is sent in the for of a light ray which is interpreted at the outlet. And hence multiple forms of data can be transferred through the cable like telephone, tv and internet together. The only most expensive thing in this process are the encoding and decoding part which need expensive equipment.
Conclusion
Optical fibers can be used everywhere starting from telephone line to internet lines. Though they are expensive, they save a lot of energy and give a very efficient output. Hence, in the net 12-20 years people will switch to optical fibers and say good bye to normal wires.

Optical fiber is a basically made up of glass or plastic and information is transferred in the form of light.
The usual electrical signal is converted into light signal by making use of LED / LASER. They vary the intensity of light and then these light is coupled into the optical fiber cable using coupler.
Light travels inside the cable according to laws of total internal reflections i.e
1. Light should travel from denser medium to rarer medium. 2. The angle of incidence should be greater than the critical angle.
At the receiver side there will be a photo detector which converts the light into electrical signal.
Advantages of optical fiber communication: * High speed data transfer. * High data security and reliability. * Large bandwidth. * Can be deployed in hostile environment. * No cross talks. * NO electromagnetic interfernce.
