Hi,
The most important information that a film certificate gives is the nature of the certificate itself. It says whether the film is U, U/A, A or S certified. Each of these are different categories.
A film certificate in India is issued by Central Board of Film Certification (known as Censor board also). The CBFC is headed by Leela Samson at presently. It classifies films according to the content.
A U film means universal, it can be shown to everyone. U?A films are those, which are viewed to persons above an age of 12 years. Children below this age can watch them only under adult supervision. Such films contain slightly offensive scenes. An A film is shown only to those above 18. Such films contain either harsh violence or obscene scenes unsuitable for children. S certified films are for special audience like doctors. They may be professional in nature.
Apart from this, the certificate also contains the name of the film, language, whether it is in colour or not etc.
