After the election results are declared, the party winning with the majority is invited by the President of India to form the government. The winning party forwards a name of a candidate for the post of Prime Minister to the president. The president then appoints the selected candidate as the Prime minister.
The winning party should be able to win the vote of confidence in Lok Sabha to form the government.
Similar procedure is applied in state elections to appoint the chief minister.
