Every society changes and as the society changes, the receptive skills and the entertainment of the society also changes. The new generation prefer fast songs and songs with no particular meaning to deep and melodious songs of the older generation. Only old people seem to prefer the old songs. The greatest consumers of cinema is always the younger generation. So the society cater to their needs mostly. After all, the ultimate aim of every producer is money. However we cannot say every youngster is like this. Nor can we say that every song nowadays is like this. For example, there were some deeply melodious songs like that of jodha akbar which even youngsters enjoyed. So in a whole the entertainment in a society depends of the consumption of the society.

Well even I too feeling bad towards the lyrics and music of present Hindi movies. We are living in the advanced technological and fast changing world, movie-makers in order to attract more and more youngsters towards the movies forcing music directors and lyricists to compose fast-beats and meaningless lyrics. We are even finding lyrics having the mixture of both Hindi and English languages. Younger generation people only the major viewers of the movies, hence music director are composing tunes which attracts them. And even lyricists are writing vulgar and meaningless lyrics. The main problem for such degrade of Hindi movie music is that movie-makers are becoming commercial type as they are just focus-sing to earn more money instead of giving good musical movies. Old is gold, we can't find such kind of golden music and lyrics in present Hindi movies.

This is all because of the changes in the taste and the effect of the western music on our traditional music. Now the songs are generally made to make people dance, not to relax. There is use of a ample amount of music and the songs have no meaning. It is not so that only the makers of the song are responsible for it, but the listeners are also responsible. The success of remix songs is a clear indication of this. So its necessary to return towards our traditional music and songs, so as to keep the real taste of these songs alive.

Bollywood songs in the former time was written in context to the real situation in the film, which was supposed to be looked after from every listener. A person was a fond of such songs due to their timely association with the situation and the direction accordingly. Now a days the songs are not well on the situation side. Rather the songs are prepared more on the basis of entertainment for lonelyness which is discarded by many people after few days. Hence in the bollywood the depth of songs is decreasing day by day.

I don't completely agree with the view that depth in bollywood songs is decreasing day by day. I do agree that there are many worthless lyrics been used in certain songs. But, you have to consider the fact that these days the number of movies/songs made is more than 4-5 times the number of movies/songs that were made in olden days. An increase in quantity often makes it difficult to maintain quality. But, if you scan through the bollywood songs made in 2011 or even in 2012, there are plenty of top class tunes available with good lyrics. It is just that the modern music listener gets lot of options these days and you have to be really smart in your selection. I am also of the opinion that these days there are more good songs available for every ocassion or festival as well. So, it would be unfair to generalize by saying that depth of bollywood songs has decreased these days.

It is because of changing world. Many movie makers are concentrating on commercial elements and marketing. They try to make more money or looking for box office collections. In this struggle they are forgetting about how to make a good song/lyrics which will touch souls of audience.

The answer is old days songs are based on ragas. As we know ragas are related with time, evening raga cannot fit in morning so, depending on the mood of the song and time our old music director made the tune. It fit with the situation and with natural ragas that is why those songs are still in the air. The music director's name you mentioned they were very highly qualified about ragas and music. They understand the emotions behind the music and they believe in the quality instead of quantity. Earlier making just one song they had to practice for many days to bring out the quality of the song compare to now songs are being made in hours. Music is become more commercial now and so the quality has gone.
This is the bad phase for the music going on where quality has become less but I believe this is not the end. The real music will come back again and make our heart happy with its melodious tune. Hoping for the best.
