Listerine mouth wash or any other mouth wash are used for plaque control and fight bad breath. These mouth washes are prepared on one main component, Clorhexidine. It is the principle compund of a mouthwash that helps in maintaining oral hygiene. This compound will cause a little irritation to oral mucosa which is not any adverse reaction. It is common. You can use mouth wash twice a day. Take 30ml of mouth wash in your mouth and rinse it thoroughly and also rotated the liquid with your tongue. It will generally irritate but will subside very quickly. And as per your friends stated that it contains alcohol is not true. You can choose other mouthwashes like Orahex which is also similar to Listerine.
Mouth washes are very good in maintaining oral hygiene. Use it twice a day after brushing.

The main purpose of mouth wash is to fight bad breath, therefore it will contain some harmful chemicals in relatively less degree. Therefore you will feel little uncomfortable when using it for the first time. These mouth washes are not very harmful but they are not harmless too. Like the perfumes we use, they have both bad and good aspects. Using mouthwashes twice a day is advisable, do not use it every now and then. Also try chewing gums or cleaning your teeth with mango leaves in-order to stay away from bad breath. Bad breath to a certain extent is caused by improper digestion. Have food that can be easily digestible, do not have too much food for dinner. Walk for something after having food. Going directly to bed after food causes indigestion.

Dear Shashikanth you are partly right. Though most of the mouth washes contain, Chlorhexidine as component, the mouth wash in question here "Listerine" contains alcohol in its composition. I am not sure of its percentage. I will get back to you again.
You can use it twice a day in little quantities like less than ten ml (undiluted). Though it is better to use it undiluted, some dilution is acceptable, if you are feeling very irritating.

Listerine is an antiseptic motuhwas.
As in the case of all antiseptics listerine has gone some bad effects an good sides.
Listerine mouthwash helps to:
1)make the teeth 50% more stronger.
2)Helps to prevent cavity
3)restores damaged enamel
4)Kills bad breath germs
6)reduce dental plaque and gingitivitis
7)cleans the whole mouth etc..
Listerine mouthwash contains the following ingredients:
menthol, methyl salicylate, eucalyptol, and thymol. 40% ethanol is used for killing bacteria.
1)Chances for getting oral cancer as it contains ethanol.
2)causes drying effect in mouth.
3)Destroys the taste buds etc..
So it will be better to use some natural mouthwashes instead of using listerine or other chemical substances.

Dear Sofia, There is no evidence that Listerine mouth wash makes your teeth strong. I even do not believe that it restores the enamel lost. Oral cancer is not caused by short term use of Listerine. I just referred to some literature and it says there is no evidence connecting oral cancers to alochol mouth washes.
Also the percentage of composition is only 26% vol/vol. It means for every 100 ml of solution we have 26 ml of ethanol but this 26 ml of ethanol is already of 95% strength with 5% water. The composition slightly varies with each commercial preparation.
