Which field should I opt after my 12th.

Date: 07 Jul 2012   Group: Career Guidance    Category: IT jobs

Hi,
I am a bit confused between B.C.S ,B.S.C-IT and software engineering.
As far I know software engineering have its entrance with all other engineering branches (AIEEE,SEEE) and i am an average student in physics, chemistry and maths but i am very good at computer science.
And i think there are less chance for me of getting good ranks in Exams having physics, chemistry and maths.
So i want to know that is there any other computer field i can try for..
and please help me clear my above confusion of software eng. , bcs and bsc-it.
Please tell me the admission criteria for getting in reputated colleges for above stated courses.(i.e how much aggregate in 12th , which competition i should prepare for. )

Hello Vishwajeet,

As per as concern with both BCS (Bachelor of Computer Science) and B. Sc. (IT) both the degrees belong to same filed i.e. Computer Science.

As per your interest you can choose any between these, as in there is not so much of difference between them.

One more thing, I would like to appreciate you as you didn't get drag with the sheep folk and got entered in something which doesn't seem interesting to you.

All the best for your future and remember at the end of day, knowledge matters degree doesn't.

Cheers to life.

If you feel that you can do very well in computer science and master that subject then you can choose BCA. Bachelor of computer applications(BCA) it contains purely computer related subjects and a little part of mathematics.

BCA is a three year course and it is divided in to six semesters where you will be having languages like kannada, hindi, tamil for your four semesters and also english is compulsory. In the final year you will be studying only the core subjects but you will not study english and language. Each semester you study six subjects and in the final year you have only four subjects.

BCA contains subjects like:

1. Computer fundamentals.
2.C language.
3. C++ language.
4. Java.
5. Unix.
6. Operating system.
7. Numerical analysis.
8. Mathematics.
9. Database management system.
10. Soft skills.
11. Indian constitution.
12. Enviromental studies.
13. Banking and insurance.
14. Project(topic based on your decision).
15. Web programming.
16. ADA
17. Software Engineering.
18. Computer architecture.

In the above mentioned subjects indian constitution and EVS are both objective type papers and you have to study them as well. Mathematics and numerical analysis are both related to maths and you can do well if you are goo at your pre university mathematics. The other subjects are all purely computer sciences. C,C++,Java,Unix are the programming languages widely used all over the world and it is more beneficial if you are mastering java because the world is more in need of java programmers.

Thanks
With regards

Goid luck friend.

Hi friend, I would like to appreciate you to undoubt yourself in such situation where one must go with proper guidance so as to get the proper channel.I suggest you that, BSc IT BCS and software engineering are all nearby close fields. Except software engineering other two are lower value degree courses where opportunities for getting job is scarced but not zero. In the software e.gineering you can get opportunity to work at good reputed organization with good experience and perks too.

Interest:
Give preference to the subjects that you are interested in. Do some research about the topics covered in each of the branches of your interest and decide what do you want to study.
For the entrance exams you must work hard on physics, chemistry and maths because it will help you to get admission into a good college. But most importantly its your gpa and overall personality that matters at the time of interview.
Remember:
An intelligent student from an average college will be placed better than a student with low gpa but reputed college.

AS per the post you look like very much interested in Computers So Dont go with any other filed. I recommend you to take up BCS. I would like to suggest you that during your course of studies, Try to do some projects(other than the mandatory project in Final year) like android applications etc which are very much related to computer science. This will put some weight to your resume and help in getting good job more than that you will have additional knowledge apart from the books. Hello

I appreciate you you have chosen your career as per your skills and interest. No doubt that in today's era computers is the most relevent field to build one's career.

There are courses like B.Sc. in Computer Science in Delhi University and other good Universities but you need a good XII class percentage to get admitted there. Also, you are a little bit late for the entrance to these cources.

Now there this one more area where you can apply in BCA i.e. Bachelor of Computer Administration which is a 3 year course. The MCA(Master of Computer Admistration) is highly equivalent to B.Tech. in Computer Science.

Presently, there is a wide scope of BCA and MCA. So you should apply for BCA now. As you are alredy late for entrance examinations of good colleges of BCA, I am suggesting you to take addmission in any good private college of BCA and perform well in that course. Properly go through atleast five important Languages of computers like C,C++, JAVA, PHP, CSS etc. in your BCA degree period. This will help you a lot to build your career well after your degree.

I can tell you about some good colleges of BCA in which you may take admission now, but you have to specify the location where you are searching college and the fees you may invest for this degree.

Wishing good luck for your future.

For any Engineering course 50% aggregate in PCM is necessary for general category. IT is the sector which have seen tremendous growth in India and is continue to grow. Pursuing a career in IT sector gives you reputed life style and hefty pay packages. Software engineering is a professional course that is provided in many engineering colleges across India. IITs, NITs and lots of other reputed engineering institutes provide this course. But as u said it requires a student to clear entrance test to get admission in such courses.

B.Sc in computer science or IT is a good option for a student who is average in studies. Although the area of studies is similar to both these courses, both are different courses. I will prefer B.Sc in Computer science between these two.

After graduating a B Tech student having computer science as its branch will be given more preference as compared to others. It doesn't matters a lot if you are not good at physics and chemistry but you should have a strong command over maths. To be a good software engineer you should have good logic skills.
To get admission in good college you need to get a good rank in AIEEE and for that purpose you should score better in Physics, Chemistry and Maths in AIEEE.

Software Engineering is a bright career.

@everyone thanks for your valuable suggestions.
I really appreciate you all for your guidance.
As of now i feel that although B.tech have more value than BCA , but BCA from good institute is more valuable then btech from an average institute.
So Please tell me some good universities for pursuing my BCA and what is their selection method...(i.e by merit or by entrance exams.)
Thanks
note :- i am pursuing my 12th now.(2012-2013)

Hello Viswajeet
Both are equivalent in terms of knowledge But if you want to do B.sc then the next most suitable option is to go for higher studies.you can go for M.SC in CE or MCA.I suggest you to go for MCA because then you will have same opportunity as a software engineer for same designation.
