I think this(2nd year B.Tech) is the best time for you to start preparing to the GATE exam.
In Second year you will just start to Get a proper idea about the Stream which you are studying. you will start to go in depth with the technical details in the 2 year. Hence I suggest you to start the GATE preparation in this mode of your Career itself.
I will prefer going to coaching classes than just by studying the books. Make sure that you are doing the proper research for the best coaching classes available in your city.

Dear Friend,
It is very nice to see that you are asking such knowledgeable question for the future prospective. I suggest you must start preparation of GATE exam right from the 3rd year of your graduation. It is needed for having some understanding about the exam in advance for more better feel of the exam when you are really needed to go ahead, i.e. in the final year or next to that year.
It will also give you some confidence in terms of the syllabus, your understanding about the syllabus and the solutions for every small, small problems which you may not get on time.

The preparation of GATE should begin in the third year of B-Tech because the syllabus of GATE is mostly up to the third year. In these three years most part of the syllabus is gone through already and a student knows his strength & weaknesses in subjects. So it becomes easy to find where to start with.

If you really want to pursue your M. Tech from IIT and Premier Institutes, you have to start exercise from your 1st year. I have attended GATE exam (ECE Branch) and found mostly question from basic electronics (refer any Basic electronics book that may explain in brief), also second year (Switching theory and Signal and Systems, Networks etc. ) . Third year and final year won't find more space in GATE exams, because students give exam in Pre final or final year, So Mostly they will familiar with concepts and does not need revision.
GATE is exam to test your knowledge as well as Memory.
I suggest Students looking for GATE should have good memory and sharp mind along with excellent knowledge and patience.
you should not go late, you should start preparing for exams and first look into previous year test papers and also if possible go for good coaching institute (you may join in 3rd year also) like Madeeasy . I suggest you not to refer local published book, local books may help to get good marks in exam, but only reputed publish houses like pearson published book may help you to clear your concepts with many examples

Prepare for gate from 2 year only.
GATE syllabus contains most of the subject which are there in our university syllabus.
Do your B.Tech subjects regularly(everyday 3-4 hours) and don't skip any topic.
Study for every saturday and sunday especially for gate.

I would suggest you to start preparing for GATE exam right from your 3rd year. This is because in your 2nd you would have entered your core area and you will not be having a broader picture of what all is you stream about. You will not know how vast is your core area and how each subject is connected to the other. This is because from my experience I have obseved that all the subjects which you study from 2nd year till 4th year, will have some relation which you will understand in your 3rd year only. Also, most of the GATE syllabus would have got covered in your 3rd year. You can select the best way of preparation in your 3rd year. So, start your preparation in your 3rd year only. Till that time, you can search for the best GATE coaching classes in your area.

GATE preparation should be started right from the beginning of the 3rd year. I would suggest you to purchase some books or arrange them from your friends or seniors and start reading them more often. You can study on your own till you don't hit the 4th year. After that go for proper coaching. Being consistent is must as you should have realized till now. I'll also advice you to consider about 1 year job experience before doing M.Tech.
So according to me here is what you need to do :
* Start studying by yourself from today only, arrange books and study material.
* Join proper coaching in the beginning of 4th year
* Appear for GATE right after your B.Tech to check where you stand.
* Take up a job for some experience
* Keep preparing for GATE meanwhile
* Re-appear for GATE after attaining an year of experience

The GATE exam is of the same difficulty as that of IIT-JEE exam. So you need to have a good time for preparation of GATE. I thing that two years are enough for anyone to fetch himself a good GATE score to get admitted in any premier college in M.Tech. So the GATE exam preparation should start from 3rd year and two years will be enough for a decent mind to qualify for GATE. So start preparing from 3rd year.

My advice is you to concentrate on your engineering subjects and from third year last onwards you can start the preperation. At that you already studied the core subjects basics and it would be helpful for you to start preparation in a confident mind. Also project time period can be utilised ... All the best

Hai my friend.
As you said that you are pursueing your B.tech and are in Second year. So i advise you to just concentrate on your present studies and from your third year you can start preparing for GATE and I think two years of comprehensive coaching will bag you a good rank in GATE. But if you are so desperate then you can refer some Reasoning and Aptitude books to enhance your thinking capability.

Friend, I am also B.Tech 2nd year. I too had same ambition as you to do M.Tech. My suggestion you should start preparing from now itself. Question in GATE are mainly from the basics of the subjects. They will be more questions from first year mathematics syllabus and the basics of the core subjects which start from second year. There is no need of joining any coaching institute. Listen the classes well. Note down the shortcuts told by professors during lecture. Write them in a seperate notes. Consult the professors for the books you have to read to get better score in GATE.

Its better to start from third year. Most of the people will start from final year, because it will become easy to adopt core subject related questions.
There are many websites providing free mock tests and study materials, you can make use of that also.
