Hi Meera, The condition your friend is suffering from looks like "Anorexia nervosa".
1.The term eating disorder is self explanatory. Abnormal pattern of eating, either in excess or less and in an abnormal manner. There are different types of eating disorders accordingly like Anorexia nervosa, Bulemia nervosa, Binge eating, eating disorders due to Pituitary tumors or HPA axis abnormality.
2. Anorexia nervosa is a psychiatric disorder not an organic disease per se. Infact all above mentioned disorders except the last (hormonal) are mental disorders.
3. Yes the eating disorder is definitely bothersome and dangerous in the longrun. She will face all the complications of malnutrition like anemia, weakness, menstrual problems, fractures, skin disorders, a complete facelift in her biochemistry and even cardiac diseases.
4. It can be cured with counselling. If the condition is serious she should be administered parenteral nutrition by admitting to hospital. If she is in depression, some anti-depressants (SSRI/NSRI) may help.
Anorexia nervosa is due to the obsession of being thin and slim with an inappropriate estimate of their body mass Index. Infact the term is a misnomer. Anorexia means loss of appetite but in anorexia nervosa patients they have normal appetite which they suppress and avoid food. Hence the term nervosa meaning neural (due to thought process) is added.
P.S Before jumping into the diagnosis make sure that there is no organic disease by appropriate evaluation.(electrolyte counts, total protein count, body iron stores, Bone density scan, ECG etc)

Hello Friends, I too think that it has become a famous problem that has many victims to that. At one end there are few people who have no food to eat but there are some other category of people who have enough wealth but don't like to eat any food. I too have a friend who is a victim of this disease, He does not even eat a roti or two he usually has only half a Roti in the morning and some food in the evening, He is a very rich boy who can spend thousands of rupees for his food as both his father and mother are earning. We often compel him to eat and he refuses to eat for sometime and then eats when my brother feeds him. He at the age of 22 is weighing only 35 kilos and this is a serious problem according to me.
Absence of Care from someone I thing it is one of the major thing that affects the person and I did find this as a cause in him. As both their parents were working there were none to take care of him and he longs for the affection and as we bring him to our family he mingles with our family and is more affectionate towards my brother and has his food only when my brother feeds him.
Eating more eatables that are non nutritious I often come across the other set of people who often go for non nutritious foods like Kurkure, Lays that makes some kind of effect and the person could not eat anything more than that. I think this should be avoided as it reduces the calories in a person that he should get daily.
Avoiding Foods as they dont like I also think that there are certain segment of people who would like to have only a specific type of food and they refuse to have the food offered to them as they have no interest sometimes.
How to cure them I think that parents have a bigger role in shaping a person. Parents should know what are the nutritious food and what their child likes to have. They should take care to provide their children's with the food and spend sometime with them in understanding them if they are unable to eat or they are not eating properly. I think it is definitely in the hands of the parents to cure these diseases.

Eating disorders are of many types based on an individuals eating habit like anorexia nervosa, purging disorder, night eating syndrome, orhorexia nervosa etc. These different disorders have different impact on an individuals apetite which affects their immune system leading to various infections and diseases.
Causes of this disorder can can vary from biological problems like inheritance to various environmental factors like child abuse, ignorance of parents, social isolation etc. These factors are all inter related and can be the main cause for these kind of disorders.

I think Dr. Nikhil has explained it best. According to me, the simplest definition of eating disorder is either random eating or eating in excess or less amonut that causes the appetite get disturbed and hence harm the body. So, one should eat in proper time, in proper amount according to digestive power and in proper way i.e. proper chewing etc.

Eating disorder is a serious problem in the age of adolence. Eating disorder in childrens is common but it does cause much effect in children. The elders should have eat food in order because they have digestive system which is very sensitive and causes the digestive problems. But not panic from digestive problems because it is a common disease. Eating disorderly may cause acidity so take baking soda because it cures and neutralises the acid in our stomach.

Thanks Mr.Aditya, I tried to put it up as simple and brief. I tried to answer the questions of the author to the point(Anorexia nervosa) and may have left some corners untouched. There is something called 'Bulemia nervosa' in which patient does binge eating followed by bouts of vomiting. Due to repeated vomitings, person lands up in chloride loss and potassium loss which can be confirmed by blood tests.
