It is upto you. In India we have the freedom to believe in any religion. But people are fighting in the name of god. Actually the god is not visible anywhere. He lives in our good actions. The God is only a belief or a positive force that leads us. He dont have a face or shape. The real god is not a Hindu, Muslim or christian. We have never heard of a war between atheist or believer just because the atheists never hurts anyone's religious emotions. They walk in their own path without disturbing others. But It is not possible to make others atheists. A religion in India is bounded with many other issues like politics. So no one will be ready to become an atheist.Anyhow your thinking is nice. Atheism may be a safe option to solve present crisis, but it is not a permanent solution. It may lead to severe problems in future. Human beings are a rare breed who are crazy for several things like money, power, fame, etc. If we simply aim to stop the fights based on religion, we may neglect the big picture. People believe in God (be it any religion, any idol or in any form) with respect, love and a small fear that someone more powerful than human beings is watching all of us from above. If this fear is eliminated, several human beings will start thinking they are the most powerful and can start doing bad things which we cannot imagine. So, it is important that most human beings have a small sense of fear of something more powerful. And only God comes to mind when we think of anyone more powerful than human beings.
But, yes we can do without any rules and regulations for all religions. There should not be any discrimination between Gods or between human beings belonging to different religions. The whole world should worship God as well as nature in it's purest form.

The Communists were apparently atheists at war with believers.
In any case, atheism will not bring about non-violence. You see atheism would go according to 'survival of the fittest', and that is enough reason to excuse violence, rape would be a part of evolving, etc. If we all count on atheism to govern the world, it will be no better than having a world ruled by religionists who use fear of man, superstition and tradition to do similar wickedness using different terms and reasonings, and they war against those who oppose their dictums.
Bottom line is whether one is a believer or not, he sure has ego and unless that is brought under control of true love there will always be fights.

In the first place without thinking one can't arrive at a solution for any serious issue. One doesn't want to think and blindly want to be an atheist is not a solution at all. Violence was there in this world in past, it is there now and in all possibilities, it will continue to be there. The only option available before us is to learn to live with it. There are religious violence, political violence, natural calamities, manmade calamities, accidents and so on.
But this does not mean that we need to panic. Amidst this turmoil most of us are leading a comparatively happy, energetic and active life.
Religions are manmade. Associated beliefs are their imaginations or inventions. God is beyond any religion. Realizing God, will happen to each and every one of us slowly and gradually or even accidently. It will also happen to an atheist because he too belong to God. But once we start realizing God, solution to all the problems will begin to emerge. If at all someone lose his limbs or hands or even his dear ones, it doesn't really matter, if one realize God.
Religion is belief. It is man's creation. It stands far below truth. God is the TRUTH. One does not have to believe in Truth. One has to realize it and once we realize it, all kinds of violence will disappear.

Being a believer in God or being an atheist is left your choice. I believe in God but I do not fight with people of any other religion as I do respect everyone's religion. So far people have never fought with me too. For me I believe because I love to assume that there is a ultimate power above us who is watching all our deeds and we will be paid for all our deeds. If people did not believe in God, much more crimes would have happened in this world. Now man has no one to fear except God(for believers only). What if that is also taken away, them he will become even more worse than now. In fact there are many people belonging to different religions and they are very good friends for years. Why do we always talk about things that doesn't favour us? Therefore I do not believe being an atheist will solve all the problems. Instead we should try the following methods.
Solutions :
(a) First we should create an awareness among people that God is one even though we worship him in different names.
(b) Respect all religions, they will respect yours too.
(c) No matter what religion each follows, Indians are my brothers and sisters.
(d) We should have the common sense that people who create war between religions are the one who wanted to make something out of a fight and they are not true worshipers of any religion. No one should support such a war, gradually people like those will disappear from our society.

In my opinion, Atheism is Ignorance and Ignorance is Bliss. So, the choice is entirely yours. But, in your present life, you must have come across both 'Good' and 'Evil'. In simple terms, I can say that 'Good' is represented by 'God'. So, if you want to attract goodness in and around you, you should have faith in God.
God represents goodness in terms of positive thoughts and positive actions. Faith and belief in God can bring optimism and peace of mind. In this World full of stress, spiritualism only can give people calmness and control over one's own mind.
When such thoughts come come to our mind and we question the existence of God, we need to introspect deep within ourselves and find answers to questions like :
1. How did the World originate?
2. How do we get sunrise and sunset?
3. Who decided 'our parents' as our parents?
4. What will happen after I take an exit from this World?
Such questions are endless and probably I too cannot answer these questions. But one thing I'm sure of is that, God is the controller of everything. God is the creator and the originator. We got this life from God and once we take an exit, we will go back to him. But in this World, we are supposed to good actions with complete faith and surrender to God.

One can doubt the presence of god and simply negate it's presence in this world but one cannot run away from one's belief. Atheism is simple believing that God does not exist; but for believing this one has to understand what he/she thinks is God. Every religion has different perception of God and support different rituals to pacify him. A religion is not created by God; he has only created the beings and gave them brain and belief. It is us humans who have given shape to our beliefs and start calling it "a God". And thus next came human egos; we started fighting on the issue of whose god is more big and powerful. Can being an atheist solve all problems? NO, as there will still be this belief and ego which will continue flashing and making people fight. Rather lets all believe in one religion and let us all call it "Humanity" and let it have only one ritual, to serve all living beings on this earth. Then this world will be such a wonderful and peaceful place to live in.

If you really think that all disputes, wars and fights are due to the fact that people believe in religion, then you are absolutely wrong.Have you ever heard anyone saying that his/her religious books support wars, or teach not to be tolerant towards other religions? No.
If there isn't peace it's due to the mindset of certain people,who proclaim themselves as leaders and try to brain-wash the masses, these people may be believers or atheists.
Wars and disputes are only due to a fraction of humans want for power, and to be precise no religious book has ever preached to be in power.
In fact, what you are saying, if just the exact opposite happens (people become true believers of god and do find the real meaning of the teachings in books) , then there would be peace everywhere.

Your question is relevant in today's time because of the destruction going on in the name of religions. In fact many people in the west have become atheist, and most of them are intellectuals, scientists and independent thinkers. This destruction, in the name of religion is going on for thousand of years and the so called religious Gurus have exploited mankind for centuries.
The west, where people think independently and have the courage to question religious beliefs, traditions and dogmas have found that religions are based on superstitions and the that no god exist which is running the world. Also the religious concepts of hell-heaven, rebirth, creation of world by god, angels, devils and multiple gods have no scientific proofs and they are fiction. That is also the reason why there is so much destruction and violence going on in the name of god. Due to these reasons the West is becoming atheist.
In Eastern countries people don't have the courage to question the existence of god and their god is nothing more than the projection of their thinking and fears. That has made people in the East hypocrites and they interpret religion and scriptures the way they want for their own interests.
you will be surprised to know that the great Indian revolutionary Bhagat Singh was an atheist and for this reason he was accused of excessive vanity and proud by his god believing friends. He wrote a pamphlet 'Why I am an Atheist' when he was in jail during 1930. You should read it if you want to get more insight into atheism.
You have to question your religious beliefs and trust in god without any prejudice and if you find your belief in god is just a byproduct of your upbringing or society and a dead belief, it's better to become an atheist. If your faith in god survives this questioning , you can remain a believer in god.
Most people don't question about god's existence because they are afraid that god may not exist. On the other hand an atheist's has questioned all his beliefs and that is why his thinking has a authenticity. Atheists have faith in their thinking that is why they don't convert other people nor preach their ideology.
Now it's up to you to choose your way.

No one can deny that there is God and his existence is undisputed. The only thing which is not proved is his physical form. Although this has been taught in all the religions that God is within you. All the religions all over the world believed that there is only one God and the main purpose of religions was to allow its follower to attain liberation by following the true path of religion no matter which religion it is.
But now days or say from the last century religion had lost its meaning and it is now being used as mean to make money, not only in India but all over the world.
It is known fact that more people have been killed in the name of religion rather than the wars fought between countries.
We are running in opposite direction to find God. God resides within us and we are running to temples, churches, mosques or gurudwara to find God. God does not reside in stone idols but in the pure heart of every human being. Being an atheist is not wrong but being a theist with no belief in God but only in idols is wrong.
Many of us must have seen this example:
An idol of any deity is lying by roadside, on which some flowers is offered. Slowly see see that after few months a boundary is build and it is slowly converted into a temple. I myself have seen at least 5 to 7 such small temples which have cropped up by roadside. It is a clear example of how some people misuse the faith of other people.
Our religions have started to teach that if you will do this you will go to hell, if you do that you will be punished, etc. How come this religion and its teaching become a mean to imbibe fear in mind of people instead of teaching them to be fearless and work hard to achieve liberation.
Atheism alone is not a solution to a crime and war free world because the greed and never quenching desires of human itself is turning the world into a place where everyone wants to have the most by whatever means available. If you look at this at bigger level then even countries are are trying to get hold of others territory and so on. The ever growing population around the world itself and growing life expectancy is putting immense pressure on the mother nature and we are trying all means to use the limited natural resources, which is going to end in coming future. All natural calamities which happen around the world is an warning to us that we start caring about nature and limit our greed to have more. God will not save us from such calamities but only we can save ourselves. It is a natural process of nature to bring balance to its system by replenishing itself through these calamities.
Solution is not out there in places of worships but within us, the only thing needed is that true meaning of all religions is identified and taught to people so that they attain harmony and in turn peace in this world.
