There are many online websites offering gate tutorials for ECE stream such as Gateforum,etc., which also provide e-books. Also, you can buy Ace Institute's Gate materials as it is one of the finest gate coaching centers in India.
In my opinion instead of confining to a single book, one should refer a variety of books consisting of number of problems. One should also study the academic textbooks of their course as it may be also useful for other examinations like Indian Engineering Services (IES).

The best preparation material that you can have for GATE is that of Brilliant Tutorials. Not only do they provide you with detailed study material that has been written by experts in the various fields, they also help you track your progress by regular tests and quizzes that help you understand where you stand and how much more work you need to put in for a good GATE score.
I would also recommend GK Publications' GATE books for the respective branches (ECE in your case) for your preparation. They explain the concepts very clearly and also provide two precious years question papers and two model papers for you to assess yourself.

Standard book for GATE preparation
There is no standard books for GATE which are available in market. Though prescribed books for GATE helps you in some ways but the disadvantage of those books are that you will not find the content given in those book as friendly. Friendly in terms of technical language as well as method and nomenclatures given in those books.
How to prepare for GATE without any coaching?
The way to prepare for the GATE is start preparation on the same day of your decision about GATE. As you are in 2nd year, there is much time available for you so, there is no hurry in going to coaching classes. Coaching classes are for those who want GATE preparation in few days or months. This is nice decision about yours that you will not go for any coaching.
Now what to do if no coaching class and no prescribed books? The answer is simple. Just study the GATE syllabus of your stream and compare it with the subject syllabus in your corresponding graduation subjects. Now after comparison you will find which topics are important and which are not. Once you find that few of the content in syllabus are very important because they are also content of GATE syllabus, you should give more priority and importance to that common content. Just study one by one subject as they come in your semester subjects.
Note down the important basic concepts as GATE is all about measuring one's engineering aptitude i.e. basics in engineering. So, prepare separate notebook for it and read it repeatedly so that you can grasp it properly. Skip those content which you know already. Also solve previous year GATE examination papers of your stream and decide which topics are frequently asked so that will be most important for you. To do more precise preparation of GATE, you need to improve reading habits. Always have confidence in whatever you do, thus you will clear GATE exam with ease. Never compare yourself with others those think that coaching will give them good marks but you can even get better marks compared to those. Also you will become independent by this effort.
