You could find Ubuntu free of cost from their site itself. Here is the link for it. http://www.ubuntu.com/download
Earlier they used to send CD even free of cost I feel mow they have stopped. One of my friend told they still deliver it but with some minimal shipping charges only.

I'd recommend Ubuntu Linux distribution for your laptop. You can install it all by itself, or along with Windows OS. Ubuntu actually has made working with Linux more of a pleasure, compared to earlier Linux versions that were quite painful. Some of the advantages are: • Access to a central repository for software updates and apps and these are tested by Canonical, the company that develops Ubuntu. • Easy access to social networking sites. • Integration with the cloud through the Ubuntu Enterprise Cloud Installer. • Built-in support for iPhone. • Current versions of Ubuntu offer better user experience with Unity, the desktop environment that replaces GNOME.

There are various Operating System available today using Linux Kernel. Two most popular Linux Based Operating System are Debian and Ubuntu. The base kernel of both the operating system is nearly same.
I would recommend you to go for Ubuntu as Ubuntu community is very active and you can find many software for Ubuntu on Web, it's dominating LINUX OS today. But if you consider your self as an Advance Computer user, a Geek then no doubt you can go for Debian.
As far as Music and Video is concerned, You can play and watch them in any Linux OS but you must have Proper Media Player for it. Bests Are: VLC Media Player, for Linux and MPlayer.
Warning: You may face some resolution issue after installing Linux OS, depending on your LCD Screen and Hardware.
