"The Indian Serenade"- what does the title signify?

Date: 17 Sep 2012   Group: Education    Category: Exam Questions

Before responding kindly read it properly. "The Indian Serenade" is a love poem composed by P.B Shelley in the request of Miss Sophia Stacey, the singer in 1819. Basically it was created as a song and it was first published in 1882 under the title "Song Written For an Indian Air". Later it was included in Posthumous Poems as a title "Lines to an Indian Air". The subject matter of the poem is quite simple and it is completely based on Love. But my question behind the poem is that why does the poet use the word Indian in the title as we know that it was written in Italy and find no direct relation to India reading the poem. So, what is the necessity of using the word or what does the word signify to this poem? Please do share your views on this topic in a logical way.

Regards,
Mainul

Dear Mainul,

As you said the poem "The Indian Serenade" is a love poem written by Percy Bysshe Shelley, a romantic poet from England (he died in Italy but was born in England). He might have written this song "Lines to an Indian air" as he was attracted by an Indian air or he had a liking towards it. There is no harm in a person living in England or Italy to like India. Shelly, might be a person who has traveled a lot and he would have liked India for some reason.

Dear Chitra Ma'am,
Of course, he might have composed this song because his attraction or liking towards India. And it is also clear that there is no harm in loving any countries living in a particular place. Apart from these, there might have other reasons for doing that job. Let's see what other Experts say.

Mainul

There might be other reasons, but as he has not written an autobiography, it is hard to find out.
