You can buy Hyundai EON it is the current best family car it comes around 3.5-4 lakhs, different and good looks and it gives a mileage of 20 km/litre. The only disadvantage of Hyundai EON is that it doesn't comes in diesel engine and price are too much these days.
Or you should buy Chevrolet beat it comes in diesel engine and comes around 5 lakh, provides you a mileage of 20 km/l. It comprises style, looks, value for money etc.

The most important things while you make a purchase of a car is:
- mileage that is how many Km / miles the car can run for one liter of petrol
- availability of service / service center
- availability of spare parts and warranty of spare parts
- how many free services the company will provide
- choosing either a car run by diesel or petrol depending on your personal usage. However diesel is cheaper but the maintenance cost is higher
- track record of the company and the model as well and the number of reviews
- test drive for a smooth driving
- additional features / accessories like CD provision, AC, FM radio etc
However, I suggest you to go for either Maruti Alto which is the best suited for Indian roads. Or you can even choose one from Chevrolet. And you can even go for Nissan micra which is good though a bit costlier compared to the other two

Before buying one should notice some important things like mileage, additional features and accessories and one has to choose either the car runs diesel or petrol. I prefer alto, for middle class family. Here I have enlisted some important information of this car.
Mileage-Maruti Alto K10 Lxi, manual, Petrol, 20'2kmpl
This car is organized with some superior features like 998cc, K10 engine comes with improved suspension, new cable-type transmission, superior brake system and more knee-room for rear seat passengers, etc.
Maruti Alto Vxi, Manual, Petrol, 20.2 kmpl
This car is well equipped with most of the advanced features like front power windows, three spoke power steering wheel, key off reminder, 13 inch tubeless tyres, front fog lamps, etc. The variant is 5 kg bulkier than the base one measuring 765 kg.
There are some other good cars available in market from good companies like Eon (Hyundai), Micra(Nissan) with affordable price. I think buying a small car is good idea in the prospect of the affordable price of the cars, increasing the fuel price and also increasing the traffic jam.

First thing keep in mind is requirement of car, if you are going to be used for long distance on daily bases then prefer a diesel engine car otherwise choose a petrol engine car.
Nowadays in market for petrol engine EON, Alto, Spark is best family car and for diesel engine you can go for Beat.
Economically these cars are convenient for middle class family.

Which are the most essential things to be consider in selection of car?
(a) Your budget. This is the most important thing, you need to ascertain your budget before making a selection.
(b) Decide whether you wish to buy a normal car or a four wheeler.
(c) Look for mileage. Four wheelers consume more fuel than normal cars.
(d) Look for the brand which has re-sale value in your place.
(e) Check whether a car has all the feature you which to have – with AC or without AC, CD Player set and so on.
(f) Whether spare parts are easily available for that particular brand and is there any service station near you house.
(g) While test drive, see whether it is smooth to drive the car. If there is any jerks, give up.
(h) Safety measures available in the car.
(i) Check whether your family can fit into that car.
(j) Only purchase if you like the finish, style of the car, as it is for long term purpose.
(k) Availability of the particular model with the dealer.
(l) The color you like, if it is available for the particular model.
(m) Always go for familiar and popular brand cars than going for new brands.
(a) American brand cars are smooth to drive and the safety measures are high in it.
(b) Volvo car is mainly designed for people who is bothered about safety concerns.
(c) Japan brand cars have re-sale value and their spare parts(duplicates) are available in the market.
(d) For our climate and for a middle class family Alto, Maruti Suzuki, Ford etc are the best.

I have been through this state of lots of confusion about buying a car. As it is your first car, it is obvious that you must not have a perfect defined knowledge about the cars. The confusion is also due to the investment we are going to do having large amount. Moreover this investment actually has a decreasing valuation proportional to time. As time decreases the value of car decreases(resale value). So if you can afford a car between range of 3-4 lakh then you can opt for , maruti alto, hyundai eon ,maruti wagonr, hyundai santro, other brand prices may vary.
If you can afford between 4-5 lakh then you have many options with lots of safety and comfort.
In 4-5 lakh you can opt for :
1) Toyota liva
2) maruti swift
3) maruti ritz
4) volkwagen polo( german engineering )
5) skoda fabia ( italian engineering )
6) fiat punto .
The options i have listed above are the best options available in the market with low maintainance cost. The cars i have listed above are made for small families.
volkwagen polo and skoda fabia have somewhat more maintainance cost than the other cars.
happy to help

Dear Paresh if you are planning to buy a new car, you first have to check how much money you can shell out and then search for a car which fits in your budget. There are various aspects which you should keep in mind when buying a car.
*Mileage or fuel efficiency: as bigger cars consume more fuel you should opt for small cars which gives a decent mileage of 15-19 km/l.
*Mentainence cost: generally buyers overlook cost of mentainence which proves costly in the longrun.
*Spare parts: some cars have very costly spare parts cause they know consumer have to buy it at any cost.
*Customer service: consult some experts about quality of after sales services of a car company.
*Space: dont overlook sitting and storage space in a car as a middle class family has more diverse needs.

These many days by seeing this question, I thought many would have given suggestion about Nano, so I have not answered. But just I wanted to give the features of Nano.
First I wanted to say that people are under the perception it is cheaper hence not worthy. But it is not so and also it is not coming for 1 lakh also.
It is coming in 3 variants as Lx,Cx and Dx and depending on your budget you can go from Lx to Cx higher to lower.
Also the mileage is good
The best part I can compare with other middle class cars is space and height. Unless you experience it you cannot match it.
Only outer look but, now this is also on roads, so people are familiar with and many colours are there to choose
Also the misconception of Engine shake and vibration, it is not that problem, and it is good for city riding and highways also up to 200 to 300 kms.
